After the Horry Walter years, the Club needed another strong character to lead them through the 70s. This they got by electing Len Williams. And a clean start was made under the new regime. After a number of seasons in the playing doldrums, the Club bounced back with some fantastic performances throughout the sides. Both the 1s and 2s won their respective Division 3 titles, the 4s won their Division 2 title and the 3s and 6s also gained promotion to Division 1. The Club decided to enter the 7s into league football for the first time and an 8th XI was fielded throughout the season.
While there have been many Saturdays where results have delighted the membership, it seems unlikely that any have eclipsed the set of results of Saturday 13th October 1973. Ironically, the 1st XI were to suffer their heaviest defeat the following Saturday when they went down 0-12 at Horley in the Surrey County Senior Cup!

Old Sweats Day attracted another healthy turnout - including former Presidents Eric Alexander and John Bull, former Hon. Secretaries Frank Sutherland, Bill Andrews and Bill Collins, former Club Skippers Jack Lindsay, Jimmy James, John Harlow, as well as RE Davies, the Woods brothers – Chris & Nat, "Richmond" Johnson, Dennis Dawes, George Ireland, AR Foster, Clem Wilson, Brian O’Donohoe, Don Mycroft and Brian Burchett.
In recognition of their valiant work supplying teas, dinners, organising jumble sales, and putting up with playing husbands, Anne Backers and Janet Knott were deservedly made Vice Presidents. The Easter tour of 1974 marked the end of the annual trips to Woolacombe in North Devon. All sorts of reasons were given for why this was the last tour there – the expense, the long journey, those who remembered the tours best were getting old, and the proliferation of children. The 2-1 defeat to Ilfracombe Town was quite inconsequential in the tour report!
