This was a season of many twists and turns. There was a strong start with victories in all three cups. League form was similarly good and the team had a better shape to it with the introduction of ex QPR star Mick Leach. Mick was an influence on the first team then and many of the current first team have also benefited from his experience and advice. Unfortunately for Carshalton, Mick was offered the opportunity to manage Leatherhead FC and one of his first signings was Carshalton’s centre half Brian Perkins. This upset the shape of the side and they crashed out of all three cups in the next round. However the benefits of having the majority of the side together for a second season became evident as the team found a pattern and style that most sides found hard to handle. The defence conceded only 19 goals all season and up front Bobby Horn notched 31 goals. In the middle of March the team lost to lowly Barclays Bank and, with only 5 games to go and 20 points in the bag, any chance of promotion seemed to have vanished. Yet 6 weeks later the team travelled to Barkingside to face Old Parkonians knowing that a win would promote them on goal difference from their opponents. In a frantic finale to the season, Carshalton players scored all 5 goals in a 3-2 win. Nigel Lawrence achieved considerable notoriety with 2 own goals (a feat that still haunts him), but his blushes were spared when Bobby Horn completed his hat-trick with only 5 minutes remaining to secure promotion to Division 1 with a fifth successive win.
The 2s suffered a heartache season, reaching the semi final of the AFA Surrey Intermediate cup, where they lost 1-0 at Nat West Bank, and being relegated from Division 2. The 6s reached the final of the AFA Junior Novets Cup played at Old Actonians Ground where they lost 1-3 to Nat West Bank.
The Vets lifted another cup when they returned with the Shannon Datastore Football Vets Trophy from Lloyds Bank. At the Old Grammarians 7-a-side tournament they reached the final for the fourth time in five years, falling at the last hurdle 1-0 to Old Actonians. At the end of the season two of Club stalwarts, Bill Backer and Peter Moorhouse hung up their boots. Both had been leading lights on the field in the 60s and have contributed significantly to the Club off the field.
During 1983-84 the youth team came under the guidance of former 1st XI keeper Mick Bee. This was to spawn amongst others the Centenary Club Captain, Keith Cave.
