Despite winning only one less game than the previous season, the 1st XI were relegated to Division 2. It was really galling, as they had enjoyed such a good season up until February. They were in the quarter finals of both the AFA Senior (having beaten Old Josephians 7-0, Old Carthusians 1-1, 4-1, Crouch End Vampires 2-0 and Old Elizabethans 3-1) and AFA Surrey Senior cups (beating Old Wokingians 1-1, 4-0 and South Bank Poly 4-0), had reached the 4th qualifying round of the Surrey Senior County Cup – the furthest ever achieved by the Club (with the help of 2 byes and a 3-0 win at Farnham Town), and were handily placed in mid table of the league with plenty of games in hand. In consecutive Saturdays the team lost in both quarter finals to the sides that went on to win the competitions – Old Aloysians and Merton respectively. This left the side mentally shattered and with 12 league games to play in 6 weeks. Needing 2 points from the final 2 games against fellow strugglers Old Parkonians and Midland Bank, Carshalton could only pick up a point at Old Parks and a penalty 3 minutes from time consigned the team to a 3-2 defeat against Midland Bank and relegation.
The lower sides did their best to lift the Club with a number of league successes. The 3s, playing under John Brown, won promotion to Division 1 with a number of young players who were to blossom into 1st team regulars in later seasons. Under the leadership of Dave Pratt, the 5s marched to their championship with a record of:

Notably this side contained a very youthful Neil Backers, son of ex Club Captain Bill and future 1st XI keeper.
