Dave Bartram had to sit out this season through injury and passed on the reigns to long standing Club member Chris Hithersay. There was an impressive start in the Surrey Senior Cup with 2 games against Godalming Town (a 2-2 draw and a 0-1 defeat in the replay, with the goal conceded in the last minute). League results were good, but the best was saved for the AFA Senior Cup – a 3-0 thrashing of Old Esthameians, then top and unbeaten in Division 1 – a performance rated as good as any in recent memory. However, defeat at Old Ignations a couple of rounds later ended the team’s interest for another season.

The race for Division 1 football was won by Midland Bank by February and the other promotion place was left to a chasing pack of 5 teams. With 6 games left Carshalton were favourites, but unexpected away defeats at Polytechnic (immediately following the Club Dinner) and bottom of the table Broomfield handed the advantage to Old Stationers, who gleefully accepted the opportunity presented them. As Stationers also won the Old Boy’s Cup and the AFA Senior Cup that season, Carshalton could count themselves unfortunate to have been in the same division that year.

John Brown’s 2nd XI gained promotion to Division 1, finishing runners up to Winchmore Hill with a record of:

They also reached the semi final of the AFA Surrey Junior Cup where they lost to Corinthian Casuals despite dominating the 90 minutes. In an age when disciplinary points were a problem for all Clubs, the 2s managed to attain this success with only one booking – the manager! The team was much influenced by former 1st XI skippers Roy MacIntosh and Pete Griggs and Mick Leach who returned after his spell at Leatherhead.

The 8s regained their Division 1 status, somewhat controversially after picking up 4 points from the 9th XI late in the season!

The Vets had the honour of welcoming Bobby Moore and Martin Peters to Beddington Park for a friendly against Old Harrodians in aid of the Princess Chula Cancer Ward. The great man left an indelible mark on everyone who met him that day.
