Having missed out so narrowly on promotion the previous season, Carshalton were doubly determined to return to Division 1. They recruited John Brown as manager, who had led both the 3s and 2s to Division 1 in the previous seasons. It was to prove an inspired decision. Chris Hithersay took his failure to lead the side to Division 1 to extremes and left to tour Australia and Terry Butler took over the responsibility of 1st XI Captain. The side was strengthened by the acquisition of former Cyprus international Greg Savva from Pearl Assurance. His accuracy from free kicks became well known throughout the SAL. Former top scorer Bobby Horn returned from Epsom & Ewell strengthening the side and giving it fresh impetus to the promotion push. By the final game of the season, Carshalton were already promoted and playing Civil Service, who were to win the other promotion spot. A Greg Savva goal secured a 1-0 win and the title.
The lower sides bore the consequences of the mindless rabble who torched the Park changing rooms and home matches were moved to Purley Way Playing Fields – a great inconvenience and reduction in facilities. This didn’t affect the 3s under Peter Yates’ charismatic leadership. They were the life and soul of the Club after the games and their style proved irresistible– if somewhat unbearable, winning promotion to Div 1 with a record of

The 5s reached the final of the AFA Senior Novets Cup after wins against Old Aloysians 3-1, Leyton County Old Boys 3-0, Polytechnic 2-1, Southgate Olympic 4-3 aet and Old Esthameians 3-2. In the final at Old Tiffinians Ground in Hampton, they lost 4-1 to Nat West. The Vets captured the Lloyds 7-a-side trophy yet again.
