Chairman's AGM Report

I would like to begin by welcoming all members to the latest AGM.

This has been my first season in the Chairman’s seat and as one would expect the task of running nine sides each week presented a number of challenges.  I would like to thank my fellow committee members for all their hard work over the winter months.  The commitment they show to the efficient running of the club is an excellent example to the membership at large.

As one would expect there were a number of successes over the course of the season whilst at the same time other aspects of the clubs operation were identified as needing improvement.  On the playing front the 1st and 2nd teams should be commended for the progress made in AFA county cup competitions although this was tempered by the disappointment of relegation for our senior side.  The coming season is undoubtedly a time for them to regroup and focus on re-establishing themselves in the top division.

Congratulations are also due to the 3rd XI and 6th XIs for their respective promotion and cup triumph.  Perhaps the most pleasing accomplishment was an appearance by the 8X1 in the SAL cup final.  It is rare for our lower sides to enjoy cup glory and although they were defeated by a strong Polytechnic side a late spell of goal-mouth pressure made the final 10 minutes an exciting affair.

As always finance is a constant pre-occupation for the Committee and our focus on cash management has resulted in healthy set of accounts.  A significant amount of expenditure has been made on renewing and improving the fabric of the club and special thanks must go to Graham Polley in this regard.  At the same time Mrs Polley worked tirelessly in arranging various social events although at times a more positive response from the playing membership would have been appreciated.

Matters for concern included payment of subscriptions, the operation of the selection policy and discipline.  These will receive particular focus during the coming season and the proposals now before you are designed to address some of these issues.  The General Committee will be looking for the playing membership to recognise and embrace the responsibilities of playing for Carshalton.  Sadly we have reached Stage 2 of the AFA disciplinary code and can expect a severe financial penalty as a consequence.  Our desire to gain this commitment may ultimately reduce the playing strength of the club but this could prove beneficial in the long run.

We will soon be gearing up for season 2002/2003 and I am confident we can make this an enjoyable and successful campaign.  I would therefore like to finish by wishing you an enjoyable summer and a good pre-season. .

See you in October.
