10th November 2002
Weekend
Review
The Committee has
sensationally sacked the Club's official photographer after
the weekend's debacle. 22 goals scored on the main 2
pitches, and every one missed by our very own David
Bailey!! Still he did manage to catch a few photos of
our Club Secretary in controversial circumstances (check out
the Club Poll for details) and a picture of the visiting
Norsemen 8th XI in typical pose (see below).
There was plenty of
excitement on the pitches this week. The 1s spurned
chance after chance and conceded some sloppy goals late on
to keep the scoreline close. It's hard to believe
there was only one goal in it at the end. But at least
the 5-4 win over Crouch End Vampires keeps them top of the
league. Simon Clare netted 4 goals during an immense
performance, carving out a number of other clear cut chances
by himself. Keith Cave scored the goal of the day with
another spectacular 25 yard screamer that was still rising
as it hit the back of the net in the top left hand corner -
the keeper didn't move, it was really was that good.
Skipper Andy Cook had an inspired game in the middle of
midfield and Ross Sinclair played well in goal, despite
conceding 4 goals - none were his fault. Simon Clare
opened the scoring midway through the first half, before a
defensive mixup gifted Crouch End their equaliser.
Keith crashed in the second and Simon Clare finished
clinically when put through on the keeper to leave
Carshalton deservedly 3-1 up at half-time. Simon Clare
extended the lead soon after the break, but Crouch End
reduced the arrears to 4-3 before Simon Clare added his
fourth to make it 5-3. Defensive frailty led at an
exciting finish at the Vampires came within a goal of
Carshalton again. Time ran out with Carshalton unlucky
not to add to their lead.

Crouch End goal comes under
fire
On the other pitch, the 2s
faced the AFA Intermediate Cup holders, Old Aloysians in the
first round proper of this year's competition.
Carshalton had lost to Old Aloysians in the semi final last
season, so this was an opportunity for revenge. Cars
raced to a 3-0 half time lead and were in cruise
control. As Aloysians pressed forward, they left gaps
at the back and Cars had plenty of opportunities to add to
their lead. However, the visitors did score, but
within a minute it was 4-1 thanks to a Jason Winyard
special. The last 10 minutes were frantic. 4-1
became 4-2, then 4-3, then 5-3, then 5-4 and unbelievably
5-5 at full time!! Extra time continued in the same
vein. Old Aloysians took the lead for the first time
in the game, but by half time the home side had pegged them
back to 6-6. The winning goal was scored midway
through the second period of extra time, when a deep cross
was headed across goal for Jason Winyard to volley into the
net from 6 yards. A fantastic game played at a
tremendous pace, by 2 well matched sides. It would
have made a perfect final (especially as Carshalton won!)

Pressure on Old Aloysians'
goal
Elsewhere the 3s lost on
penalties in the SAL Cup at Old Parmiterians after the game
finished 2-2 after extra time. We won't mention who
missed (usual bribe of a beer has been accepted). The
4s continued their recovery with their 4th win in a row,
this time a 2-0 victory at BB Eagles. The 5s lost
their AFA Senior Novets tie at Nat West Bank against their
4th XI.
Back at Beddington Park, the
7s lost 2-4 against Norsemen. In the opinion of their
opponents, they only have themselves to blame for their self
destructive arguing. Pity we didn't get a chance to
speak to our skipper who raced off after the game - you owe
me £7.50 as I had to sub your team's match fees,
Razz. The Norsemen side upheld their club's reputation
after the game, staying well into the evening (pictured
below).
The 8s drew at home with HSBC
on the 3rd team pitch with both goals coming from Michael
Tilley. No news yet of the Vets who were at
Polytechnic.
It is good to report that a
large number of people have paid their annual subs this
weekend, with the promise of more next week. Remember
that last week is the last chance to pay. From 15th
November the subs rise to £80 and £40 for those in full
time education or unemployed. Failure to pay be next
weekend will mean that you may not be selected the following
week. Please get your subs in now to avoid meeting
with an unfortunate accident. Just see what we had to
do to get Colin Banham to pay...

The Under 12s
surrendered their 100% record when they lost 2-5 at Surrey
Rangers, with the defence having a bad day at the
office. Still, their 2 nearest challengers also lost,
so they remain top of the league. More good news is
that top scorer Craig Stanley has been cleared to play for
the Under 12s by Crystal Palace. The Under 15s kept
their 100% record intact with a comprehensive 4-0 win over
Carshalton Rangers and are also sitting pretty at the top of
the league.
