December 2002

News Summary

30 Dec 2002 - Visit of Montreuil Bellay - John Thoroughgood has confirmed with Laurent Grivault of Montreuil-Bellay that our French counterparts will visit Carshalton over the Easter weekend.  We are planning to return with a touring party of our own over the Whitsun weekend.  There is a subcommittee chaired by Dave Rowles looking into planning these trips, and any suggestions will be welcome.  Starting next year (i.e. next week), we will be looking for volunteers to help organise both hosting the French and the tour to Montreuil Bellay.

Anyone who has been on these trips will know what to expect.  New members and tour virgins are encouraged to talk to those who have been previously - it is a scream and not to be missed.

30 Dec 2002 - Weekend Preview - after 2 weeks of intensive Christmas training (?!) it's back to competitive action on the 4th of January.  The 1s travel to Old Stationers' new ground for the first time and will be keen to get back to winning ways.  Other teams on their travels are the 4s, who will be hoping that their twice postponed SAL Cup tie at South Bank CUACO beats the weather this time, the 5s who are at West Wickham in the SAL and the 6s who have a vital game with fellow Division 1 title chasers Polytechnic.

Beddington Park hosts the 2s' SAL tie with Weirside Rangers.  Tony Edwards' team will be looking to improve on the 1-1 draw at Teddington earlier in the season in order to keep their top of the table position.  The 3s need to bounce back after a couple of recent setbacks and BB Eagles will present a stiff challenge as they lie one place above the 3s.  The 7s face First Division Civil Service 7s in their AFA Junior Novets Cup Round 2 tie and the 8s host Polytechnic 8s and will be hopeful of a positive result to help them climb the table.  The Vets entertain Blackheath Wanderers.

23 Dec 2002 - Weekend Review - the 1s were really disappointing in their 2-1 defeat against Old Parks at Beddington Park.  The game was evenly contested but Parks were just that bit stronger, especially in the second half.  The 2s continued their remarkable turn around in form since Tony Edwards took over the captaincy with a 6-0 drubbing of Alexandra Park in North London.  Matt Dudley on leave from the army scored a hattrick and even keeper Ross Sinclair scored from the spot.  Charlie's reaction to the news would have made a great picture.

The 3s lost for the second week in a row at Bank Of England, and we hope for a report from Matt Huffer.  The 4s turned around a 3-6 defeat at Norsemen at the start of the season by thrashing the boys in blue 5-0.  Young Adam Taylor scored a hattrick.

The 5s had a narrow defeat at table topping BB Eagles in the mud of Gunnersbury Park and the 6s ground out an important point up at Norsemen, with skipper Matt Osborne scoring both goals.  The 7s v 8s league fixture had to be postponed because of a lack of players.

The U12s gave a below par performance in the league at Halliford Youth and lost 2-5 to dent their promotion hopes.

On behalf of the Committee, can we take this opportunity to wish all Club members and visitors to the web site a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, successful and happy New Year.

16 Dec 2002 - SAL Cup Draw - the 4s' twice postponed SAL Minor Cup second round tie at South Bank CUACO has been rescheduled for Sat. 4 Jan.  The holders, Carshalton 6s have been drawn at home to H.S.B.C. in the semi final of the SAL Intermediate Novets Cup on Sat. 25 Jan.  The 8s have a home tie in the quarter final of the SAL Junior Novets Cup against Norsemen 8s to be played on Sat. 18 Jan.
16 Dec 2002 - Danny Garcia - as many of the Club membership may already know, the 2s / 3s goalkeeper has been told to leave the Club.  He chose to stop his cheque payment of his annual subs.  Consequently the Committee has terminated Danny's membership of the Club.  He may not be selected to play for any Club side, nor use any of the Club's facilities, including the bar.
10 Dec 2002 - Player Registration - here is an excerpt from the SAL web site, which explains exactly why all CFC members must register their details, either online (see line on the right hand column of this page) or using the registration sheets available behind the bar)

From the beginning of 2002-03 the FA were to impose a rule upon all County FAs and leagues which dictated that they must have lists of players (and their details) for all clubs in membership.  This has been postponed for one season and will come in to place for 2003-04.  However, the SAL has asked all clubs to provide lists of their playing members for this season in a dry run to ensure that when the system goes live our clubs will not be found wanting.

We are entering, or rather - have entered, an age when liability is paramount.  More and more unsavoury incidents on football pitches and in other sporting arenas lead to civil or even criminal action being taken in the courts.  If the individual culprit cannot be identified it is likely that somebody along the chain of command will be brought to book for their actions.  Ensuring that clubs, leagues and county FAs have accurate records for all players means less risk to those who devote so much time to organising our football and also means that the sort of players who cause physical or other damage can be brought to book and will not be allowed to continue anonymously playing for other clubs.

8 Dec 2002 - Weekend Review - a much better set of results, especially for the top half of the Club this week.  The 1s returned to winning ways, as a Dave Tilley 30 yard thunderbolt sealed a 2-0 win at home over Old Lyonians.  "Much improved performance" was the verdict of Paul Gunter.  The first clean sheet of the season was greeting with the question "Was Backers playing?".

The 2s turned things around as well.  After last week's dismal showing in the AFA Intermediate cup, they returned to league action with a 4-1 drubbing of Winchmore Hill in North London, where young Ryan Polley scored a couple on his promotion to the 2s.  The 3s won handsomely for the second week in a row, this time putting 8 past a hapless Old Stationers side.  The 4s SAL Cup tie at South Bank CUACO was postponed for the second time.

The 5s lost a tight game at home to Old Latymerians, despite scoring 4 times and the 6s had a particularly unpleasant match at Kew Association, but came away with a 3-3 draw, despite some "interesting" decisions.  The big talking point in the Club this week was the astonishing defeat of the 7s by the 8s in the SAL Cup.  No doubt we will hear more of it from the 7s midweek.  We might even get a report from the 8s this season!    The Vets had a respectable 0-0 draw at Economicals, described by skipper Jim Finn as the best game of the season.

The youth teams continue their fine form with another faultless set of results.  The U12s stunned previously undefeated Roffey Robins of the Horsham and District League 7-2 at Beddington Park, Louis Barron-Pell scoring 4 for the second week in succession.  Later, the U15s whipped Corinthian Casuals 6-2 to keep them top of the Premier Division of the West Surrey Youth League.  The U14s game was postponed.

2 Dec 2002 - Weekend Review - sadly the 1s were let down by a player who decided not to show for the meet.  Consequently they had to travel to Weirside Rangers with a bare 11 men and returned with a 1-3 defeat.  The Committee will not accept this behaviour.  It let down the entire Club.  The 2s produced a dismal performance and deserved to be knocked out of the AFA Intermediate Cup by a very ordinary Old Cholmeleians.  Thankfully the 3s showed us that there is a rosy future for the Club with a number of excellent youngsters and a handful of wrinklies defeating Lloyds TSB Bank 7-2.

The 4s lost at Civil Service in the AFA Minor Cup and the 5s crashed against a very strong West Wickham side.  The lower sides kept the results respectable with the 6s winning at Winchmore Hill in the SAL Cup (the holders are now in the semi finals), the 7s winning at Polytechnic to move into 2nd place in the league, and the 8s thumping bottom of the table Old Stationers 7-1.

The Vets had to pull out of their AFA Cup tie at Old Parmiterians after a number of non availables - playing golf in South Africa, under-age players, Peter Culham in Norwich and a player unable to make the meet time.  So they played locally against Temple Bar, the match finishing 3-3.

Once again the youth teams had a field day.  The U12s came back from another early goal to go top of the league with a 5-2 win over Camberley Jaguars and the U15s thumped Carshalton Rangers 8-1.  Does anyone know what has happened to our U14 team over the past month?

The Quiz Night on Friday was very enjoyable, but once again we failed to get enough support from Club members.  Thanks to those who did turn out.
