12th April 2003
Old Sweats
Day
Another excellent turnout of
Carshalton Football Club former players (almost 60), who
made their way back to the Field of (their) Dreams. It
was good to see so many older members were able to attend,
and continue what is a unique function. Loads of
stories swapped, tales recounted, memories tested,
recollections exaggerated and alcohol consumed. Our
thanks to Anne Backers and all the ladies who served another
excellent meal, to Rod Woolvin and Dennis Philpott for their
organisation and hard work, and to Adrian Turner for
speaking on behalf of the Club.
There were a number of awards
made on the day. Adrian Turner was quite deservedly
awarded The Carshalton Mug for his service this season as
Chairman, and also for his many years on the
Committee. John Thoroughgood and Buzz Geddes were made
Life Vice Presidents - John for his 20+ years of service in
various Committee posts, and Buzz for adding a touch of
glamour to the Committee over recent seasons.
There was an extra award made
this season. David Wombill, son of the late Jack and
Katie Wombill, who both served the Club for many seasons in
the 50s and 60s and continued to keep in contact with the
Club right up until their recent passing, dedicated a
special trophy for "The Unsung Hero" of the
Club. The trophy is a Quaiche - a Scottish drinking
vessel, and it will be awarded each season by the previous
recipient to a person considered to have given service to
the Club beyond the call of duty. The very worthy inaugural
winner was Rod Woolvin, a man who has put so much into the
smooth running of the Club for many seasons, as 1st XI
coach, Bar Manager and sounding board for the more junior
Committee members (like Dennis Philpott!). A well
deserved award and a hugely popular winner.
