October 2003

News Summary

27 Oct 2003 - Weekend Review - bad results at the top of the Club.  The 1s have a chance to concentrate on the league after falling at the first hurdle in the AFA Senior Cup.  The 2s lost their unbeaten start to the season at home to Winchmore Hill and the 3s went down at BB Eagles.  However the 5s and 6s banged in the goals to restore a bit of pride.  The 7s lost in a tight game at Polytechnic.

On Sunday the U9s game was called off on Friday with Rocks Lane Rovers unable to field a team.  The U13s won at Staines Town Juniors in the WSYL, the U15s lost, but the U16 made it through to the next round of the WSYL Cup with a 4-2 win at Uxbridge.  This Sunday they represent the Club in the AFA Youth Cup at Norsemen.  We wish them well.

27 Oct 2003 - A Worrying Trend - on the 7s arrival back from Poly at around 6.45pm, rather than being greeted by a horde of Club members and catching up on results, Ian Lewis was astonished to find including bar staff, just six persons in the clubhouse.  The total swelled to eight when Paul Pearce arrived back from the 1's game in North London and peaked at nine when Neil Edwards turned up at about seven o'clock.  When I asked where everyone had disappeared to, Rod suggested that they were most likely to have been drinking in The Plough.  I suggest the Club will not be able to absorb the obvious loss of revenue from the resulting poor bar takings indefinitely.

Please support your Club by spending more time and cash in the bar.

22 Oct 2003 - Warning - Thief - here is an extract from an email sent from John Monk, secretary of the AFC to all AFC clubs.  Many thanks to ex 1st XI keeper Steve Donnelly for passing this information on.

I have received the e-mail appearing below from Old Rutlishians warning of a thief who posed as a potential Club recruit in order to gain access to their dressing rooms.  Among other items he stole a car from one of their members. Rutlishians warn that he may try this ploy with other AFC Clubs so you may wish to alert your Club Officers to be on their guard.

20 Oct 2003 - John Gale Dog Night - thanks to Carshalton Football Club members, friends, friends of friends, family and Nick the Milk we managed to raise just over £3,000 at the John Gale Dogs Night held in May.  John and Carole are going to go on a Med cruise . It was a lot of fun doing this.  Hopefully photos will follow...         Anne Backers
19 Oct 2003 - Weekend Review - the 1s lost to Bank Of England in their first home game of the season.  In a game of few chances, Mark Raven's "clinical" penalty after Paul Pearce has been bowled over on the box, seemed to have secured a point, but a very late goal nicked the point for the visitors.  The 2s had a comfortable win in the AFA Cup with a brace of headers (!) from skipper Tony Edwards.  The 3s bounced back from last week's extra time defeat to beat Old Stationers 6-3 with a hattrick for Matt Osborne.  However of the other sides, only the 5s could manage a point at Lloyds TSB Bank, while the other sides lost.

The Vets registered a clean sheet in their draw with HAC, despite a back four with a combined age of 217!

On Sunday the U9s continued their 100% record in the league with a win that was more convincing than the 2-1 scoreline suggests.  The U13, U15s and U16s all had very convincing Surrey Cup 1st Round wins.

16 Oct 2003 - Disciplinary Code - all players are advised to read the Club's Disciplinary Code for 2003/04 that is published on the web site.  Particular note should be made of the additional Club suspension for dissent.  This makes up the vast majority of offences in our Club and is totally inexcusable.  Save yourself £10 and keep your mouth shut please.  Enjoy your football.
12 Oct 2003 - Weekend Review - the 1s gained their first point of the season at South Bank, coming back from 0-2 down at halftime with second half goals from Paul Pearce and Shaun Swan.  They could have bagged all 3 but Matt Wigham "did a Beckham" with a penalty.  The 2s impressive start to the season continued when they sneaked a 2-1 win against Alleyn Old Boys.  Elsewhere there were defeats for the 3s (in extra time), 4s, 5s and the 6s.  We were unable to fulfill the 7s game and the 8s have been withdrawn from the league.

Over 50 Club members watched the England game at the clubhouse, and this was very encouraging to see such a good turnout.  Hopefully now we have the use of our clubhouse we can turn things around.

On Sunday, the U9s lost 0-1 in the League Cup against Premier Division opposition.  The U13s came back from 1-3 down with 15 minutes to go (equaliser in final minute of normal time), to triumph 5-3 in extra time.  The U15s lost heavily at home to Predators, who were very impressive.  Finally the U16s continued to their good form with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Hampton Youth.

9 Oct 2003 - 8th XI Withdraw from SAL - it is with regret that the Committee has withdrawn the 8th team from the SAL.  Current playing strength and lack of sufficient members prepared to skipper sides means that we have no option but to remove our lowest side.
6 Oct 2003 - Weekend Review - another defeat on their travels for the 1s.  I'm afraid we have not had any feedback on the game.  However, the 2s kept their good start to the season going, much to the delight of Weirside Rangers' roving reporter.  Agree with the comments about our pitches looking like a Picasso painting, and the luxury of the legendary dungeon for the visitors.  I think we are going a bit soft giving them lights at this time of the year though.  We can only apologise for the lack of a bar - believe me, this is hurting us more than you can imagine.  At least you only miss it for 1 week!  Loved the description of Paul "Stick Insect" Pearce and Tony "Skinhead Skipper" Edwards.  Spot on there.

Disappointingly there has been little feedback on the other performances, and in some cases no results!  Any player want to let us know how they got on?

3 Oct 2003 - Facilities Update - bar licence application will be heard on Wednesday 8 October.  We will bring news of this important decision as soon as we have it.  Action has been taken regarding the handover of the clubhouse from Beddington Cricket Club and this will be complete in time for this weekend's matches.  Rod Woolvin, Dennis Philpott and Tony Edwards are re-assembling the goalposts at lunch time on Saturday.  Additional volunteers are asked to come down to assist.

Pitches are in a shocking state after the dry summer.  No-one can remember them ever being this poor.  More weeds than grass.  We are discussing the matter with our current ground staff to see how the situation can be improved.  In the meantime, please have patience when playing at home.
