March 2004

News Summary

29 Mar 2004 - Weekend Review - possibly the best week of the season.  Fantastic Club Dinner on the Friday, then wins for the 1s, 2s and 3s on the Saturday.  The 1s 3-1 win at BB Eagles has given them an excellent chance of an unlikely survival.  Crucial games remain against 3 of their relegation rivals, starting with this week's home game against Old Stationers.

The 2s notched 5 against Old Parms with Tony Edwards notching a hattrick.  The 3s also managed an impressive win, but it looks likely to be in vain, as they are favourites for the drop.

The 6s warmed up for their SAL Cup Final on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Civil Service.  The 7s also drew with the same scoreline at home to Old Actonians 9s.  The U9s gained revenge for their earlier defeat with a 2-1 win at Chipstead, Ben Sokoe scoring both goals.

On Sunday there were defeats for both the U13s and U15s - and that despite scoring 6 goals!!  The U16s drew 0-0 with their main rivals Tooting & Mitcham and are level on points at the top of the league with a game in hand.

29 Mar 2004 - Club Dinner - held on Friday 26 March, Carshalton FC's annual Stag Dinner was another roaring success.  Guest speakers Ian Hunter of Civil Service and Nick Potter of Old Salesians as well as first team skipper Andy Cook entertained the crowd throughout.  Keeping a semblance of order was M.C. Dick Stoker.  Anne Backers and her ladies served wonderful food with great cheer as usual.  We thank them all for their time and effort

22 Mar 2004 - First Aid Certificates - the Club is committed to ensuring that at least one member of every side is in possession of a current, recognized First Aid certificate.  Can any Club member who holds a valid First Aid certificate, please email the Club at carshaltonfc@hotmail.com, letting us know your home address, contact number, and the organisation who provided the certificate.

Carshalton FC will host an approved FA First Aid Training course in April (date to be confirmed).  This course is FREE to all Club members and we encourage as many as possible to attend.  This is an excellent opportunity to gain a recognised First Aid certificate and receive training that could save someone's life.  The course will be held on a weekday evening and last for 3 hours.

22 Mar 2004 - Weekend Review - congratulations to Old Esthameians 4th XI who won the AFA Minor Cup at Beddington Park with a 2-1 win over Albanian.  The Club sends its best wishes to the Old Es player who sustained a serious leg injury during the afternoon.

With the top 3 sides out of action last weekend, the spotlight fell on the lower sides and the 4s, 5s and 6s all recorded comfortable wins while the 7s lost at Poly.  The Vets drew 1-1 with "sniffer" Neil Backers on the scoresheet.  Surely the only example of "Teflon" using his head all season.

On Sunday the U16s lost on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Surrey Cup semi final.  Tooting & Mitcham scored a controversial goal with only a couple of minutes left when the refereee overruled is assistant on an offside decision.  The boys have a chance to avenge that defeat when they host Tooting & Mitcham in the WSYL this Sunday.  Elsewhere the U13s and U15s both won.

15 Mar 2004 - Weekend Review - the 1s had the result of the weekend when they travelled to high flying Bank of England and came away with all 3 points to give themselves a fighting chance in the battle to beat the drop to the 3rd Division.  Simon Clare scored a brace and a very happy Neil Backers returned with his first clean sheet of the season.

The 2s gained a good point at Winchmore Hill, but there was more misery for the 3s and 4s who have both been relegated.  The 5s game at Alleyn Old Boys was called off when Alleyns were unable to raise a side.  The 6s won a hard fought 3 points at home to HSBC with Gareth Banton's first time shot from the halfway line the pick of the goals.  The Vets won for the second week in a row against Old Pastovians.

In the youth section, the U9s lost a 3-1 halftime lead to go down 3-6 at home to Chipstead in a friendly.  The U13s drew at Ashford, the U15s lost against Tooting & Mitcham and the all conquering U16s won at Woking Town.

15 Mar 2004 - U16s Update - the U16s are currently 3 points behind leaders Tooting & Mitcham in the WSYL Premier Division with 2 games in hand.  They travel to Tooting & Mitcham this Sunday in the Surrey Cup semi final, and face them again the following week at Beddington Park in the WSYL.  They renew acquaintances with them again in the WSYL Cup Final at the Met Police ground at Imber Court on 18 April, 10.30am kick off.  The Club wishes them all the best in their search for a remarkable treble.
