2005/06 Season News Item...

29th June 2005

Annual General Meeting

Carshalton Football Club's AGM was held on Wednesday 29th June at the Clubhouse.  Here are the official minutes of the meeting.

Apologies received from Kirk Reynolds, Tom Prowse, Johnny Wilkinson, Lee Byrne, Peter Lester and Elliott Stevens.

Minutes of the previous AGM were published on the web site immediately after the AGM, and were taken as agreed.

Chairman's Report (John Thoroughgood)
John Thoroughgood addressed the membership and told them of his decision to stand down next season from the position of Chairman and the committee of Carshalton Football Club. He thanked the committee and the membership for their support for the 20+ years he has served on the committee. He did say that he would be available for selection for the newly formed 8s.

Club Secretary's Report (Trevor Boughton)
I would like to thank you all for making the effort and finding the time to attend this year’s Annual General Meeting and hereby present my first report as your Club Secretary for a season that I look back on as a somewhat enlightening experience.

FA Charter Standard
Even before the season started it was announced in August that Carshalton FC had become the first SAL Club to receive the FA Charter Standard Club award and the first AFA Club to achieve the award for both Adult and Youth football. This is a magnificent achievement for the Club and one that puts us right up there with the best in the amateur game.

Squad System
The Squad System introduced at the start of the season, although greeted with much trepidation and caution at early skippers’ meetings, has turned out to be a great step forward for the Club and after a few initial teething problems which were perhaps understandable in this its first season, has undeniably benefited the Club.  This has seen us throughout the season not just simply fulfilling our fixtures, but seemingly as the final league tables would indicate putting out week after week strong and competitive sides. However, there have been certain issues that have arisen during the season and these will obviously have to be addressed before the start of next season.

The system is perhaps not yet perfect but does as most would agree provide us now with a much better selection policy than we’ve had in recent seasons and, if nothing else does away for the need of the Monday night selection meeting where, more often than not the teams selected on the night would bear little or no resemblance to those that would actually line-up the following Saturday.

Another positive which has come from the introduction of the Squad System is that the majority of our playing membership believes this to be a fair selection policy, which has undoubtedly helped to check the annual trickle of disillusioned players leaving the Club.

On the Pitch
The season, which although perhaps not the most successful in terms of honours, did however provide evidence of a renewed strength in playing levels and that the Club is beginning to reap the rewards from running a Youth Section.  Indeed, many of the players representing our senior, reserve and third teams during the season have graduated from our youth sides over the past few years.

The Club did enjoy some success though with Tony Knott’s 3s who won promotion from the Junior Section’s third division, and Ian Lewis’s 2s who, after a tremendous run in the cup, finally lost out to the more experienced Kent Cup holders Old Addeyans 1s in the inaugural final of the Surrey / Kent Intermediate Cup, played at the Kent CCC.

The following is our league record for the season which I believe shows clearly how both the introduction of the Squad System and also the progression through the ranks of our younger players has rejuvenated the playing side of the Club and made us competitive at all levels, hence no relegation battles for any of our sides this time around.

AFA Disciplinary Code
We once again reached the Level 1 stage with a score of 62 points resulting in a £30 fine. It must be highlighted though that we only escaped level 2 and a fine of £100 by the narrowest of margins – just 1 point or one booking.

A decline in discipline on the field of play in recent seasons is not just confined to Carshalton FC but is a problem currently experienced by all clubs in the SAL and indeed the amateur game as a whole.  I’m sure that the Committee elected tonight will next season probably debate this issue on numerous occasions and will have to consider perhaps the introduction of increased fines and longer bans for persistent offenders.

Incidentally, there are a number of outstanding fines still owing and I would remind the players responsible that they will not be eligible for selection in any of our games (includes friendlies) next season until such time as their monies have been received.

Table of Disciplinary Points
1st Team – 12 Points
2nd Team – 11 Points
3rd Team – 18 Points
4th Team –   7 Points
5th Team – 13 Points
6th Team –   0 Points
7th Team –   1 Point

AFA Referees Association Hospitality Award
Having been runners-up last year, normal service was resumed when we again won the AFA Referees Association Hospitality Award, which Rod Woolvin received on behalf of the Club from David Ellery at the Referee’s Dinner in April. Many thanks to the managers, skippers and the older members who always make sure that the referees are well looked after, involving them in conversation and of course buying them a pint or two after the game.

AFA Cup Final
An indication of how well the Club is doing off the pitch was reflected when we were invited by the AFA Cup Committee to host our fourth consecutive cup final - Port of London Authority and Frenford the visitors to Beddington Park in March for the AFA Open Veterans Final.

Annual Membership Fees
Without doubt this was one of our better seasons in recent times for “getting the money in”, due mainly to the policy adopted by the Committee to target the habitual offenders and also the insistence throughout the season those who didn’t pay, didn’t play. Among the newly elected Committee’s many goals for the forthcoming season will be that of endeavouring to achieve a one hundred per cent fully paid up membership, which, with the support of our managers and skippers shouldn’t be beyond us.

Club Dinner
The Club Dinner was well supported and provided the 80 or so in attendance with a fantastic evening’s entertainment. Andy Walters in his first year catering for the event supplied us not only with a superb dinner, but also a great team of waitresses. The speakers on the night were Mike Tier of Lloyds TSB and our own Andy Cook and Dick Stoker, all of whom were first class. I am reliably informed that the Kosovian red and Albanian white, purchased in a job lot from the local Londis store, went down a real treat.

Stanley Junior Park School Link
As part of our commitment to the FA Charter, qualified coaches from the Club ran Coaching Sessions at Stanley Park Junior School, Carshalton Beeches. A total of nearly 200 Year 5 & 6 pupils enjoyed these sessions throughout the season, which comprised Dribbling, Passing, Shooting, Movement, Teamwork and Games sessions.

Social Events
Unfortunately there weren’t too many social events at the Club during the season. However, the few that did take place were very well supported. I’ve already mentioned that the Club Dinner provided a fantastic night's entertainment and there was also Old Sweats Day in April that went off very well and a very popular Quiz & Curry Night hosted by the Youth Section in October, which raised an impressive £675 to fund the further development of youth football at the Club.

Finally I wish to thank my fellow Committee members for their support during my first season as Club Secretary, the managers, skippers and players for their efforts on the field of play and of course all our non playing members who continue to turn up at Beddington Park during the season to give the their advice, support and indeed their criticism, all of which is much needed and always greatly appreciated.

Treasurer's Report (Graham Radford)

The annual accounts were distributed to the membership.  The main concern of the committee was the bar profit, this had dropped to 39% and the bar takings were also down again on last season.  This is due to the lack of teams drinking on a Saturday and the lack of Club and non-Club functions.  Dave Paterson asked if he could volunteer to arrange social functions during the season, it was agreed that Dave Paterson would be the club's social secretary, which would be a non committee position.  Many discussions took place to consider how to improve the turnover and this will be the Committee's primary focus next season.

David Geddes spoke about Norlands Foundation grant of £57,000 that had been secured by the football and cricket clubs. The joint committee of Beddington Cricket Club and Carshalton Football Club has been formed to manage the refurbishment of the clubhouse and manage the grounds and facilities.  A further grant application of £40,000 from Viridor in relation to general ground repairs has been submitted and we await a reply.

A number of the membership asked about the payments for the TV costs.  These relate to Sky which costs the club £140 per month.  This was installed by the club to help keep people drinking in the clubhouse after games.  It was recognised that more work needs to be done to utilise this facility.

The AFA fines relate to the number of bookings / sendings off still unpaid from the 2004/05 season.  It was agreed that these players must pay their fines before being allowed to play again for the club.  The players concern our Garry Baker , Jonathan Phillips, Andrew Taylor, Chris Tilley, Michael Pickett, Dan Coombes, Derek Wright, Jack Goodman, Chris Smith, Nick Ruthen, Michael Connolly and  Ryan Roberts.  The total of fines outstanding is £190.00.

The Match Fees for the 2005/06 will increase to £90.00 for a home game and the away fixture match fee will remain at £65.00. The increase for the home fixture is that the referee’s fee has increased to £25.00.

The annual subscription will be renamed the joining fee and will remain as last season £40 Senior and £20 for Juniors, those in full time education and unemployed.  The family membership will remain at £50.

Any Other Business

French Trip
John Thoroughgood spoke about the disappointment of having to cancel the trip at the last minute due to players/members dropping out. The proposal is that we should organise the trip for May 2006 with those players and members wishing to travel to France paying a non-refundable deposit of £50 by Christmas 2005.  if we do not have sufficient numbers by that time, the trip will be cancelled

Pre Season BBQ
Andy Walter proposed that the Club organise a BBQ on the first weekend we have the ownership of the clubhouse.  This was passed to our new social secretary to co-ordinate.

Raffle
Rod Woolvin asked if the skippers could run a raffle each week after the games.  It was agreed that this would be another item owned by Dave Paterson.

Club Magazine
Bill Backers requested that the country members who do not have access to the Club's web site be sent a newsletter each week. Dennis Philpott has agreed to facilitate this for the 2005/06 season.

Training commences at 7pm, Tuesday 12 July 2005 and will be conducted by Shaun Swan.

We wish all Club Officials the very best for this season and it is up to the Club members to support those who put their own time into the running of the Club
