2005/06 Season News Item...

September 2005

News Summary

30 Sep 2005 - Words of Wisdom - football is a hotbed of opinions, cliches and totally gibberish post match comments from the terminally stupid - and not just at our Club.  This season we bring you the first in a series of weekly quotes from the world of football.  This week's comes from Bobby Campbell, Chelsea manager in 1990 in his programme column...

"The FA Cup touches so many people.  Its a fair bet that, by the end of today, players you have never heard of will be household names - like that fellow who scored for Sutton United against Coventry City last season."

25 Sep 2005 - Weekend Review - the 1s scraped through their AFA Surrey Cup first round game with a late winner at Wandsworth Borough.  The 2s also left it late and a soft penalty award in injury time game Gary Cummings to roll the ball into the corner with almost the last kick of the game.  The 3s and 4s lost on their travels but the other results further down the Club were indicative of the strength of players in these teams.  Perhaps some need to be brought up to strengthen the upper echelons of the Club?

The 5s, 6s, 7s and 8s all had emphatic wins, scoring 21 goals between them.  Sympathies to Gilles Warrell in the 7s who just returned from injury and dislocated his knee for the 7s.  we hope the injury heals properly and you continue to support the team from the sidelines.  Congratulations to Mark Lowther Snr, whose goals for the 8s means that he now has a complete sweep of scoring for every senior Carshalton team from 1s through to 9s and the Vets.  Can't be many others who have achieved this feat - well done Mark.

On Sunday, the U8s lost narrowly at Epsom Eagles, the U10s came from 2 goals down to draw their first league game at Worcester Park, the U11s won their first ever Surrey Cup game, despite a below par performance and the U14s couldn't put their many chances away and lost 1-4 in the league.

19 Sep 2005 - Weekend Preview - we take over the clubhouse this Monday (19 September) and share with Beddington CC, who have a game on the main square.  Therefore there is no 3rd team pitch available this weekend.  The kick off times are as follows - all teams KO at 3pm except the 7s, who start at 1pm and the 8s who start at 3.30pm at Kew.

The 1s play in the AFA Surrey Cup at Wandsworth Borough, while the 4s are at Chislehurst Sports 3s in the AFA Minor Cup.  All other games are league fixtures.  Vets of course have a friendly.

All teams are encouraged to make use of the improved facilities at home and come back to the Clubhouse after away games.  The more we take behind the bar, the more we can invest in our facilities.

18 Sep 2005 - Weekend Review - what a great start for the 1s as last season's top scorer Rob Morley (who scored 22 for the 6s) notched a couple for the 1s on his competitive debut, helping the 1s to a 3-0 win over Old Finchleians.  The 2s eased through to the next round of the AFA Intermediate Cup at Old Stationers and will face Ibis at home on 15th October in the next round.  The 3s arrived an hour late for their game at Crouch End and it did not take place.  We are investigating the circumstances, which are not clear cut at this stage.

Elsewhere, the 4s lost but all other lower sides claimed convincing wins, with pride of place going to Dave Thoroughgood's 8s winning 6-1 on their first league game of the season.  Congratulations to Adam Lemon who scored the first hattrick of the season in the 7s 5-2 win over H.S.B.C.

On Sunday the U8s won on their debut - a fine 3-1 win.  The U10s won 3-0 in the Inter League Cup on their competitive debut.  The U11s continued their fine form with a 3-1 win over Gas United, while the U14s disappointingly went out of the League Cup at the first hurdle.

12 Sep 2005 - Weekend Review - our very first pre season matches at home ever (!!) were a huge success.  We got the chance to look at some of the new players to the Club, check out the girth of players returning from close season grazing, and enjoy a few jars in the late summer sun (and later on in the English summer rain).

On the pitch, though results are not important at this stage, it was concerning how easily the 1s were turned over by Merton.  A bit more first team players at training is essential, and we hope players will have a hard look at themselves before deciding not to train this season.

The 3s and 6s had good performances and there is evidence that there is a lot of talent lower down the Club.  Hopefully these people will be challenging for places in the higher sides in the future - attending training will give those individuals a head start.

A big thank you to the Club men who refereed the games - Andy Cook, Andy Walter and Paul Bourke.

And finally a huge vote of thanks to Andy Walter and Dave Paterson who manned the BBQ.  Great food (though I personally suffered the revenge of the chilli sausage the following day!!).  Nice to have a beer with friends and chat over disputes that have already arisen - some things never change!  Good luck to all sides this coming weekend with the first round of league games.

On Sunday the youth team kicked off their seasons.  The U8s and U10s fixtures were cancelled, and the U11s won 2-0 at cup holders Oxshott Royals and the U14s returned from Slough Town with a stunning 4-1 win.

6 Sep 2005 - Weekend Review - the 1s and 2s travelled to Ewell for the traditional pre season friendlies with Old Salesians and recorded a defeat and a win.  The 1s (featuring a few trialists and fielding only 10 men for the first 40 minutes!) went down 2-4, while the 2s won 5-3 with Ian Lewis describing his goal as "George Best-like".  I fear this is George in the present tense rather than in his heyday.

The 3s game at Weirside Rangers was called off, but there were encouraging wins for the 4s and 5s.  The 6s faced a very strong "8th team" at Lloyds where they lost 1-3, though 2 disallowed goals and skipper Greenhouse missing a penalty didn't help.  The Vets lost narrowly to Wandsworth Borough, but were pleased to welcome some new blood into the team.
