October 2005

News Summary

31 Oct 2005 - Weekend Review - the 1s did all they could to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against the league leaders Ibis.  Having carved out a 4-1 lead in the second half, Carshalton eventually hung on for a 5-4 win thanks to 2 penalties from Matt Wigham and a second consecutive hattrick from Rob Morley (it's getting very expensive, isn't it Rob).  The 2s ground out a 2-1 win at Merton with Paul Pearce and Neal Collard scoring.  The 3s struggled to a 1-3 defeat at EBOG.  The 4s won a very competitive game with an own goal in the last minute against South Bank CUACO 4s.  This took them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season.  The 5s drew at HSBC with Alex Kiszczuk and Mark Raven scoring.

The 6s struggled at lowly Old Westminster Citz., but won narrowly thanks to Tony Edwards and Roberto Carlos (must have been a 50 yard free kick).  Both the 7s and 8s progressed in the SAL Cup against North London opposition and face more North London opposition in the next round at home (Winchmore Hill 7s and Norsemen 8s respectively on 26 November).

Quite a night on Saturday with the place still buzzing at 7pm, when your correspondent was forcibly removed by his family.

On Sunday the U8s and U11s came up against classy opposition and shipped a few goals.  All part of the learning process.  The U14s fared better winning 4-1 with Steve scoring all 4!!  The U10s progressed through to the next round of the league cup with a 3-2 win over Manorcroft United

25 Oct 2005 - Training  - Club training night at the clubhouse is switching from Tuesday to Thursday 27 October for thIS week only.

Also there is a Senior Squad training session being held at the Powerleague, Hannibal Way, Wallington from 9pm on Wednesday 26 October.  All Senior Squad players are expected to attend.

25 Oct 2005 - WARNING - THIEVES ABOUT  - can all members, opposition and officials please be warned that ALL valuables should be taken out onto the pitch with you.  We had an incident this week where our Treasurer's car was stolen from the car park.  His keys were taken from the referee's changing room (Graham is also a referee, before someone points the finger of suspicion at why our Treasurer would be in the referees' room!).
25 Oct 2005 - Thanks  - to the unsung heroes who help to make the Club tick on match days - to Pam Woolvin in the kitchen for the sterling work she does in there week in week out - always smiling.  To Rod Woolvin for opening up, keeping the bar running, continually clearing up, locking up and all the jobs he does throughout the week.  To Nicola Woolvin for manning the bar throughout the afternoon and evening.

To the Old Gits who always ensure the referees are looked after in the bar, and for directing abuse constructive criticism to anyone who will listen.

To the Club referees, without whom we would have no games - on this occasion thanks to Jamie Fascione for refereeing the 8s - file under "never thought I'd see the day...".

To all those who run the kitchen on Sundays - particularly Colette Roberts - providing great hospitality and much needed funds to the Youth Section.

We appreciate all the time and effort that people put in to running this Club - including the skippers and of course the Committee members who put in long hours every week to administer the Club in a professional manner without any financial compensation.

25 Oct 2005 - Swanny in Amsterdam - well done to Shaun Swan for completing his sponsored marathon in Amsterdam on 16 October.

The picture on the left was taken as he returned from the weekend.  The bright lights were not there when this photo was taken.  Did you have to pass a drugs test, Shaun?

24 Oct 2005 - Eloise Anne Clare - we are delighted to announce the birth of Eloise Anne to Simon and Mel.  Mother and baby are doing well.  Father is still on cloud nine, judging by his performance for the 8s on Saturday!  Apologies for the delay in this announcement, Simon.
25 Oct 2005 - Dodgy Legs Competition - anyone recognise these suspect legs last seen exposed in the clubhouse a week ago.

The first 3 correct answers received at the web site offices will receive a pair of tickets to "An Audience with Alan Waight" at The Dukes Head, Wallington on Saturday evening.

Simply send your answer on a postcard with your name, daytime telephone contact number and Care in the Community certificate number to "Alan Waight's Dodgy Legs Competition, Carshalton FC Web Site Offices, PO Box 1898"

24 Oct 2005 - Weekend Review - Firstly, apologies to those supporters who turned up at 3pm to watch the 1s on Saturday only to find that the game had kicked off at 1pm.  This was a late change requested by the opposition, which I failed to communicate on the web site.  We will ensure that ALL kick off times are communicated on this page every week.  Some of the swearing and vitriol pouring from the Old Gits corner was not very attractive, but I guess understandable.  I'd like to thank Dick Stoker in particular for winding up every over 50 in the London Borough of Sutton and sending them my way over the course of the afternoon!

On the pitch, the 1s cruised through against frankly weak opposition, but nonetheless a well crafted hattrick from Rob Morley, who looks better with every game (and bought a hattrick jug), cemented his starting place.  The 1s now travel to Old Salopians (who beat Old Suttonians 3-2) on 12 November.  The 2s finally had to settle for a share of the spoils at Old Stationers despite having on the hour mark gone 3-1 up.  Goals in a very competitive game came from Paul Pearce 2, and Gary Cummings.  The 3s trounced Old Lats as they moved up to second in the table.  Chris Thompson's elation at scoring 2 goals for the first time was deflated somewhat when he discovered that he had been mistaken for Tony Knott from the clubhouse viewing gallery.

The 4s picked up an important point with a spirited performance at Actonians, as the new squad come to terms with live 2 divisions higher.  The 5s had an excellent win (Dave Jenvey's first of the season) at Polytechnic.  The 6s win over Old Salesians means the 5s and 6s remain 2nd and 3rd in the table respectively.

The 7s were without a game, while the 8s threw away a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Kew, and the Vets lost 1-4 at H.A.C.

On Sunday there were goals galore.  The U11s lost to a strong Molesey Juniors side while both the U10s and U14s hit double figures against their league opposition.

19 Oct 2005 - Weekend Review - a bit later than usual, but it's been a busy weekend.  On Saturday the 1s threw away a 2 goal lead, but there were encouraging signs.  2 bookable offences meant we played with 10 men during the second half, but only a last minute penalty denied the 1s all 3 points.  The 2s cruised in their cup tie at home to Ibis with a 5-2 win and will face a trip to Old Parkonians on 5th November in round 3.  The 3s also had a comfortable win at Old Westminster Citz. with Jack Goodman stking his claim for a place in the senior squad with a hattrick.

The new look 4s were unlucky to lose 1-2 at Kew (Michael Pickett looking particularly sheepish after the game!  The new look 5s also lost narrowly at Alleyn Old Boys.  The 6s made hard work of getting past Albanian in the AFA Cup; both Dave Robins and Tony Edwards missing penalties (and scoring).  James Greenhouse's men face a trip to North London to play Old Edmontonians 6s on 12 November in round 2.

The 7s continued their bright start to the season with a Chris Rose brace giving them the win against Lloyds TSB 7s.  Lloyds 8s got the better of our 8s, while the Vets has a very creditable 2-2 draw with Army Crusaders.

On Sunday the U8s and U14s defeated Sutton United (Steve scoring a hattrick for the U14s), the U10s went out of the Inter League cup to higher division opposition and the U11s beat last season's champions in an entertaining clash at Beddington Park.

18 Oct 2005 - Words of Wisdom
Bryan Robson, Man U captain 1990...
"If we played like that every week, we wouldn't be so inconsistent"

Andy Roxburgh, Scotland manager, returning from a humiliating draw with the Faroe Islands was approached by a reporter at Glasgow airport...
"Can I have a quick word, Andy"
"Velocity" replied Andy Roxburgh, brushing past the reporter.

12 Oct 2005 - Committee Meeting - Following 10th October's Committee Meeting, we can announce a number of changes to the playing side of the Club.

Firstly, Shaun Swan has been appointed caretaker manager of the 1s as an interim measure while applications for the role of 1st team manager are considered.  He will be supported by senior members of the Club.

Secondly, we have formed a Senior Squad which consists of players who play in the 1s and 2s teams.  They will train together and be considered as one squad.  Selection for the 1s and 2 teams will be carried out jointly by the 1s and 2s managers on Monday nights from players in the Senior Squad.  All players in the Senior Squad are available for selection in either side.  Any player not prepared to play for either side will not be considered for the Senior Squad.  The Committee would like to thank both Shaun Swan and Ian Lewis for the efforts that have been made to arrive at this situation.  It is a significant step forward for the Club and recognises the elite nature of our flagship sides.  All players with ambition to represent the Club at the highest level must strive to break into the Senior Squad.

Thirdly, to address an issue of sectional strength lower down the Club, Dave Jenvey has been appointed 5s skipper and Andy Walter has been appointed 4s skipper.  Initially they will continue with their current squads, though these are likely to change after 17 October's Selection Meeting.  We wish them both good luck in their new roles and thank them for their flexibility and understanding in implementing the recommendations of the Committee.

These changes will benefit the Club membership as a whole in the long run and the Committee has taken these actions in response to a number of comments and suggestions from Club members.  We thank those members for their contributions and hope this will inspire other members to approach your Committee members with suggestions to improve the Club - facilities, policies or match day issues. Your Committee were voted in by the membership at the AGM and are showing by their actions that they are prepared to take hard decisions in order to make this a better Club to be a part of.  Your co-operation with your Committee is appreciated.

11 Oct 2005 - Weekend Review - the 1s had a remarkable result and produced one of their best displays for some time in securing a point at Old Wilsonians.  It might have been better but for a fine save of Keith Cave's second half penalty.  This was all the more remarkable set against the backdrop of a number of players being unavailable for various reasons, and the resignation of manager Neil Edwards earlier in the week.

The 2s also failed to score against Wilsonians, but conceded a couple themselves to go down in the league.  The 3s won at home, while the 4s lost in disappointing fashion at Old Westminster Citz.  The 7s also had a disappointing result at Kew, while the 8s continued their encouragingly impressive start to the season with a win and clean sheet over Actonians.  The Vets lost to a very strong Old Grammarians team.

Match of the day was the league clash of the 5s and the 6s.  The game was a tough uncompromising clash which finished 2-2.  The 6s opened the scoring through Ed Adkins, then John Harris replied with 2 from the spot, the second in the final minute.  But Justin Said managed to get the equaliser with the last kick of the game.  Nice to note that there was much friendly banter in the bar afterwards.

On Sunday the U8s romped into double figures against Surbiton, the U10s had a tough, narrow 2-1 win to keep their unbeaten start to the season going, the U11s came down to earth with a bump 0-5 at Epsom Eagles, while the U14s were disappointed only to draw 2-2 with Ashford Colts.

11 Oct 2005 - Neil Edwards - Neil stepped down as manager of the 1s last week.  The Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank Neil for his time and efforts during his time in charge, and to hope that he will continue to be an avid watcher of the team and continue to grace us with his presence in the bar afterwards.

As an interim measure, Club skipper Shaun Swan will run the side with support from senior players.

11 Oct 2005 - Words of Wisdom
Gordon Lee, Everton Manager 1981...
"Even when you're dead, you shouldn't lie down and let yourself be buried"

Gerard Houllier, Liverpool Manager 2002...
"You can't say my team aren't winners.  They've proved that by finishing fourth, third and second in the past three seasons."

11 Oct 2005 - Yard of Ale Competition - what a thriller this turned out to be - certainly when compared to the England v Austria match.  Following their epic 2-2 encounter earlier this the day, the skippers of the 5s and 6s took part in a Yard of Ale challenge.  The 5s' skipper Andy Walter finished it "in one" in a time of 1 min 15.  The 6s' skipper James Greenhouse completed it "in one" in a season's best of 38 seconds!!  Well played James.  Still a bit to go to match the world record of Peter Dowdeswell of Earls Barton, who downed it in 5 seconds!!  Any challengers?
