31 Jan 2006 - AFA Surrey / Kent Senior Cup -
the 1s have been rewarded with a home draw in the semi
final. They will face Clapham Old Xavarians (who
knocked out HSBC on penalties) on 25th February at
Beddington Park. In the other semi final, Old
Salesians play West Wickham.
29 Jan 2006 - Weekend
Review - what a set of results on Saturday. By
5.30pm it was fever pitch in the Clubhouse, with the
Chairman promising a free bar if all teams recorded
victories. Thankfully for the Club's finances, the 5s
result when it came in resulted in a chorus of jeers.
Up to that point we had the 1s reaching the AFA Surrey /
Kent Senior Cup semi final with 4 goals for Matt Wigham (3
penalties) and another for Rob Morley. We also had the
2s' comfortable 5-2 win over Bank of England, plus the Vets'
4-1 win over Chelsea Old Players. The other home
result in at this stage was the 6s remarkable 8-3 win -
remarkable for 2 reasons - firstly Old Westminster Citizens
opened the scoring, and secondly for young Justin Said's
double hattrick. This was an outstanding personal
performance, matched only by his ingenuity in buying 2 jugs
in the bar afterwards! Next came news that the 3s had
won 4-2 at Alleyn Old Boys with Chris Wells grabbing a
hattrick. That was followed by the 4s easy win at
Merton in the SAL Cup quarter final. This win gives
them another away trip in the semi final on 4 March at Old
Owens.
As tension grew in the clubhouse, and Bar Manager Rod
Woolvin questioned the parentage of the Chairman, the next
result in was the 8s' 3-0 win over Merton. Only 2 more
results to come! The air of invincibility was
shattered when news arrived of the 5s defeat to Old
Salesians, and no-one really batted an eyelid at the 7s' 2-2
draw at Lloyds TSB.
Special mentions to...
Old Westminster 5s, who remained in the bar following their
heavy defeat, and reminded us all what SAL football is all
about (mind you they were very keen on the special offer on
jugs of snakebite and blackcurrant, and especially keen on
the idea of a free bar!). Well done lads - a credit to
your club.
Also worthy of note is Rod Woolvin for all the work he does
every week to ensure we have a well run bar and pleasant
atmosphere.
Final mention goes to Shaun Swan, Match Secretary and Club
Captain. On Saturday Shaun agreed to referee the U11s
game on the Sunday. Unfortunately I received a call
from a rather stressed sounding Shaun 15 minutes before kick
off informing me that he was at the Brighton Road Esso
garage waiting for the AA. Apparently Andres his
girlfriend (lovely to meet you on Saturday) had filled his
diesel car with unleaded petrol (she has a petrol car
herself). This begs the question - exactly what were
you doing sending Andrea out to fill up your car on the
coldest morning of the winter, while you no doubt warmed
yourself in the car? Outrageous behaviour!
On Sunday, the U8s and U11s both lost 0-5, while there were
convincing wins for both the U10s and U14s in the
league. How cold was it?!! Like playing in the
tundra.

Review - no doubt what the result of the day was last
Saturday - the 1s travelled to table toppers Norsemen with a
number of notable absentees and came away with a 4-2 after
conceding first. Well done to all concerned.
Let's hope they can bring that form into this weekend's AFA
Surrey & Kent Senior Cup quarter final at Old
Westminster Citz.
The 2s went 3 down to Weirside before storming back with 2
goals to set up a grandstand Alamo finish, with Weirside
holding to claim all 3 points. The 4s, 6s and 7s had a
day to forget with decimated squads - holidays during the
football season - what is going on?
The 5s continued to go along nicely in the league, sitting
in 2nd position after their 3-0 win over Polytechnic.
Big game this week against 3rd placed Old Salesians 4s.
The 8s did themselves proud losing only 0-2 at Winchmore
Hill 7s in the SAL Cup. Certainly plenty of hope for
the future in that team. The team with no future (the
Vets) lost 2-3 to Malden Vets!!
On Sunday the U8s lost to Kew Park Rangers, the U10s had a
very rare league defeat against Hampton Rangers, the U11s
were very unfortunate to lose - let alone by a score of 1-4
to league leaders Molesey Juniors, while the U14s came
through their Surrey Cup tie at Croydon Athletic Juniors 4-3
after extra time, Eki scoring all 4 goals.
26 Jan 2006 - Youth
Section Cup Progress - congratulations to the U14s
who reached the quarter finals of the Surrey Cup with an
extra time 4-3 win at Croydon Athletic. New signing
Eki scored all 4 goals to bring his tally to 8 in 3
games! Not a bad start! The U14s travel to
Purley Panthers on 26 Feb. in the quarter finals.
The U11s have their WSYL Cup semi final at Imber Court
against Epsom Eagles on 5 Feb.
And finally, the U10s have reached the final of the WSYL
Invitational Cup where they will play Worcester Park Colts. Date and venue have not been announced yet.
20 Jan 2006 - Facilities
Redevelopment - just to keep you informed of
recent works to improve facilities. Firstly, we have
invested in new training floodlights, which we hope will
encourage better attendance at training (excellent sessions
by the way chaps). Secondly, we have laid a new carpet
in the bar area - please treat this with respect - no muddy
boots or shoes please.
We are also in the process of redecorating the function
hall, the stairwell and the flooring downstairs.
Finally, we have made a heavy investment in refurbishing the
showers. This weekend there will be 14 shower heads
available (we have only ever had 12 previously) and this
will rise to 21 when the works complete. All shower
heads and pipework has been replaced, an additional water boiler added
and the whole room retiled and proper ventilation and
lighting installed. We hope our members and visitors
enjoy the improvements.
Still more to do, and your committee are working to secure
further funding to continue the improvements.
20 Jan 2006 - Arran
- congratulations to Arran who has been selected to
represent the West Surrey Youth League this season at U11
age group.
20 Jan 2006 - Training
- the Club has this week upgraded the training
facilities with the installation of new floodlights.
Training sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are
run by Dave Jenvey with assistance from Mark Raven.
All sessions are well prepared and vary every week.
Club members are urged to attend these sessions as the
benefits will be immediate - not just increased levels of
fitness.
16 Jan 2006 - Weekend
Review - the major talking point this week (other
than there being no showers) was the 3s remarkable 5-4 win
over Old Westminster Citizens. 0-2 down, then 2-4
down, the team showed remarkable spirit to win, with Chris
Wells bagging a hattrick, to move them into 3rd place.
The 4s also had an excellent win and continue their climb up
the table - maybe even a promotion push. The 5s drew
with BB Eagles to remain in second spot. The 6s lost
their SAL Cup quarter final in extra time at Old
Owens. The 7s and Vets both had wins by a single
goal.
The 2s saw their promotion hopes severely dented at Old
Wilsonians where they conceded three second half goals -
Paul Pearce coming off the bench to grab a late consolation.
Perhaps more worrying though are injuries to Chris Tilley
and Billy Andrews, which are likely to see both ruled out
for at least a couple of weeks. The 1s game
at Ibis was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Many congratulations to the U10s who reached the WSYL
Invitational Cup Final where they will face Worcester Park
Colts. The U8s lost in their cup, while both the U11s
and U14s scored convincing league wins.
9 Jan 2006 - Weekend
Review - welcome back after the Christmas
break. Another decent set of results. Nice to
see the top 3 sides winning and getting amongst the
goals. The 1s threatened to throw it all away again
against Weirside, but we were rescued by Keith "Mr
Carshalton" Cave with 2 minutes to go, when his 30 yard
free kick found the top corner. Cue mad celebrations,
followed by sudden realisation he is in his 40th year!
Great result considering the number of cry-offs on the day.
There was no shortage of incident at the Racecourse Ground
where on a dreadful playing surface the 2s turned in a truly
inspired performance to fight back from two goals down,
eventually claiming the points and going back top of
Division Two with goals from Steve Powell, Shane Bowes and
Paul Pearce who headed the winner in the 58th minute.
The 3s took 3rd spot, defeating Alexandra Park with a much
changed side. The 4s lost by the odd goal at
Polytechnic, while the 5s remain is 2nd place in their
division following a 4-2 win over Old Westminster Citz.
The 6s SAL Cup game at Old Owens was postponed until next
week. The 7s drew with BB Eagles. The 8s were
given a footballing lesson by Gladstone Rangers 1st team in
the AFA free-for-all Cup. How on earth can they be in
this competition? The Vets lost 2-3 to new opponents
The Barbarians - an excellent report of which has been
penned by "Stormin" Norman Joss.
On Sunday the U14s fielded a new signing, who scored twice
in the first 10 minutes, came off and then rejoined and
scored from a penalty to claim his hattrick - not a bad
debut!!! Welcome to Carshalton, Eki. The U11s
put in a very poor display, missing a hat-load of chances
and deservedly losing to Gas United. The U10s march on
in 2nd place in their division with a 4-2 win over Cannons
FC. And well done to the U8s who won their first game
since the leagues were reconstructed - a nice 3-1 win at
Hampton Youth.
5 Jan 2006 - David
Aldridge - Congratulations
to David Aldridge and his wife Jackie who gave birth to a
daughter, Aimee, on Christmas Day.
Glad to hear David will be playing in goal on Saturday for
the Vets.2 Jan 2006 - New Years
Game - a Carshalton Club side defeated a Beddington
Cricket Club select team 5-2 in an entertaining clash at
Beddington Park this morning. Carshalton went in 5-0
at halftime, but Beddington came back into the game as a
variety of substitutions and changes to formation were made
by Carshalton FC - 1st team keeper Ross and father Charlie
Sinclair ended up playing up front for the last 20
minutes!
Thanks to Beddington CC for their participation and special
thanks to those who made the day possible - particularly
Matt Wigham, and to Nicola and Rod Woolvin for running the
bar.
1 Jan 2006 - Ken Simmons - it
is with regret that we announce the death of former Club
member Ken Simmons.
The funeral will be held at
Christchurch & St Mary Magdelene, London Road,
St.Leonards on Sea on 13th January at 2.30pm. The church is close to Warrior
Square Station.
