Last Gasp Goal Sinks the AFA

Front Row: Paul Pearce, Matt O'Sullivan, Chris Shaw, Ade Oshilaje, Matt Harrison, Leon Smith

A James Ayres (Old Salesians) spot kick on 71 minutes after Leon Smith (Old Meadonians) had been dumped to the ground looked to have won a tough but nevertheless hugely entertaining contest for the AFA Rep Side against the Royal Navy FA at the Victory Stadium, Portsmouth, on Wednesday evening.  However, with just over ten minutes remaining, the hosts forced an equaliser, and then in the final minute took full advantage of a static AFA defence to snatch a dramatic winner.

According to the record books, the first fixture between the associations was on the 8th March 1966, since when there has been 39 meetings with the Navy having now won 20, the AFA 15, with surprisingly just four of the matches ending as draws.

Following the game, Captain M R B Wallace, Chairman of the Royal Navy Football Association, presented AFA President, Malcolm Perks, with a beautiful cut glass football to commemorate the AFA's Centenary.
