December 2007

News Summary

29 Dec 2007 - Cliff  Dudley - it is with regret that we report the death of Cliff Dudley who played for our 1s and 2s from 1951 to 1956.  Cliff was part of the link with Elmers End Cricket Club which served the Club so well in that era.  He was a prominent member of the highly successful Elmers End team as wicket keeper and represented the Civil Service cricket rep team.  His funeral will be held at 10am on 4 Jan. 2008 at St Christophers Church, Chelsham.
16 Dec 2007 - Youth Section Xmas Drinks - the Youth Section Xmas Drinks was another successful event with all teams well represented.  Chocolates were distributed to the boys and some wonderful dishes were produced by the parents.  Nice to have a beer and watch the Liverpool v Man U game.  Massive thanks in particular to Lois, Jane, Colette and Tracey and everyone who co-ordinated the lunches.  Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this event.

We wish all the boys, parents and supporters of the youth section teams a very Happy Christmas and a successful New Year.
16 Dec 2007 - Weekend Review - another excellent weekend of results for the top sides.  The 1s laboured win at Old Lyonians coupled with Weirside Rangers' defeat at Norsemen means that at the Xmas break we are 9 points clear at the top of Division 2.  The 2s continued their impressive start to life in Division 1 by pulling out a 7 point gap at the top after a tough 2-1 win over HSBC.  The 3s earned a very hard fought victory with the only goal of the game at Crouch End.  This result keeps them in second place, 3 points behind Kew with a game in hand.  The 4s hit top spot after beating leaders BB Eagles 2-1 at Beddington Park.  Quite an achievement by our top teams.

The 5s had a narrow away defeat losing 1-2 at leaders Weirside Rangers and the 7s lost at Lloyds TSB 5s.

The 6s stormed into the quarter finals of the AFA Intermediate Novets Cup after a comprehensive 7-1 win at Old Aloysians in North London.  They have a home tie with Old Meadonians on 2 Feb. in the next round

On Sunday the U10s finish the first half of the season top of their league after a 2-1 win over 3rd place Samba Youth.  The U13s proved ultimately too strong for a spirited Phoenix Royals team, running out 6-1 winners with a hattrick from Lewis.
12 Dec 2007 - Xmas Drinks - on Saturday 15 December, we are holding our Xmas drinks.  The 2s and 4s are at home and will be propping up the bar and we encourage as many away teams as possible to return to the clubhouse to share a drink with your fellow Club members.

On Sunday, the bar will be open straight after the youth section games (KO 10am).  All Club members are encouraged to come along for a Sunday lunchtime drink and to have a look at how the future of the Club is progressing.  You will be surprised at the standard of football displayed by our young players.
8 Dec 2007 - Weekend Review - Beddington Park beat the weather this weekend with only Pitch 3 being deemed unplayable.  The home sides took full advantage of this by winning all the home games.  The 2s beat an Old Owens side who looked strangely familiar...in the Carshalton away kit.  Lessons in organisation to be learned by the lads from Potters Bar!!  The 3-2 win stretches their lead at the top of Division 1.

The 4s won 3-2 in their SAL Cup tie with Weirside Rangers.  Skipper Ben Doherty missed the game following the birth of his daughter in the week, but the side won in his absence.  They have a home draw in the quarter finals against either Nottsborough of Old Westminster Citizens on 12 January.

In the other home game the 7s recorded a 4-2 win over Polytechnic 9s in the AFA Cup, helped by a double from Jamie Fascione.  In the only away game to survive the weather, the 5s threw away a 2-0 first half lead to lose 3-2 in extra time at Civil Service.

On Sunday the U10s drew 3-3 conceding a last minute goal, the U11s game was postponed and the U13s won convincingly in the league.  Pride of place goes to the U9s who have plugged away all season without a point, but who returned from Ashford Town with a 6-1 win.  Joy unbounded from management, players and supporters alike!  Well done all.
6 Dec 2007 - New Nets - the nets on pitches 1 & 2 have been upgraded to green & white Euro style box nets.  Our Youth Section raised over £750 to pay for the new nets and supporting stanchion poles, and these were installed by Youth Development Officer Paul Roberts and Buzz a week ago.  Full instructions have been provided to all skippers on how to attach these new nets and where to store them after the game.  Players are requested to only put these up after reading the instructions.

Many thanks to everyone in the Youth Section who has contributed to this initiative.
6 Dec 2007 - Weekend Review - a hugely disappointing display saw the 1s defeated in the league for the first time this season, emphatically beaten by Weirside Rangers who quite frankly had looked capable of scoring with every attack they mounted.  In an otherwise forgettable game for Ian Lewis and his youngsters, the only bright spot was skipper Dave Tilley's consolation goal five minutes from time.  Many thanks to Club stalwart Neil Backers who stepped in at the eleventh hour after regular keeper Jamie Wilde was forced to withdraw with a late injury.

The 2s in stark contrast went to of the league with a resounding 4-1 home success over previously unbeaten Nottsborough.  Shane Bowes notched a couple to take his season's tally to 12 and top the Club scorers chart.  The 3s are through to the SAL Cup quarter finals where they will face a trip to Old Salesians on 19 January, after winning 2-1 at Division 1 leaders Old Actonians thanks to a brace from Matt Perkins.  The 4s won 6-2 in the league with a hattrick for Mike Baillie and a couple from Andy Bitmead to keep up with Shane Bowes in the scorers chart.

The 5s game at Old Esthameians was postpones and there were defeats for all the lower sides and the Vets.

On Sunday the U13s went out of the Surrey Cup in farcical weather conditions and the U9s showed encourgaging signs despite their defeat.  The U10s reached the Invitational semi final with a win over Esher Athletic Wizards.  They will face Hampton Youth in the semi final (date to be determined)
