2007/08 Season News Item...

January 2008

News Summary

29 Jan 2008 - Baby Byrne - congratulations to Lee Byrne and his missus who had a baby girl Katie Leigh Byrne on Monday.  She weighed in at a respectable 7lb 10oz.  Mother and baby doing well.  We look forward to wetting Katie's head!!!
27 Jan 2008 - Youth Section Open Day - a big thank you to the Club members who came along on Sunday to see the youth section in operation.  Many thanks for all the words of support and the many compliments.  Now you know how big an operation we run on Sundays.  This was a real success and we plan to make this an annual event to showcase the youth section.  Remember that all Club members are welcome on any Sunday to cheer on our young lads and see the future of the Club.
27 Jan 2008 - Weekend Review - I can't remember the last time the 1s and 2s were both involved in 0-0 draws on the same Saturday.  The 2s will be much happier with their point which sees them stretch their lead at the top of Division 1 to 11 points.  The 1s are 7 points clear, but will be disappointed not to have taken all 3 points in a poor game with the division's bottom club.

The 3s and 4s continue their assaults on promotion.  4 goals in the first half sealed the 3s' 8th straight league win and stretched their lead in Division 2 to 6 points.  The 4s remain in second place in their division after a tight 2-1 win at Civil Service.

Probably the best performance of the day came from the 5s who battled back from 0-2 behind to league leaders Weirside Rangers to claim a 2-2 draw.  This will give Dave and his boys confidence going into the business end of the season.  The 6s were very unhappy with their 1-1 draw at Alleyn Old Boys for a number of reasons.  The 7s came back from 1-4 down to level at 4-4 with division leaders Kew Association 6s, but lost 4-6.  The 8s lost 2-3 to a Merton team they had put 9 past at the start of the season!  The Vets drew 1-1 with Chelsea Old Players in a rare home outing.

On Sunday the U9s and U10s lost, the U11s drew, while the U13s narrowly won their top of the table clash.  Many thanks to everyone who worked hard to make the Youth Section Open Day a success.

22 Jan 2008 - Youth Section Open Day - this Sunday 27 January we are inviting all Club members to come along to see the youth section in operation.  We have 3 teams playing at home and the usual Carshalton FC hospitality is available - hot and cold drinks and snacks.  We hope that has many Club members as possible will come along to see a side of the Club that goes unseen by the vast majority of our membership.  This is the future of the Club on show.  We are sure you will be pleasantly surprised by the talent within our youth section.  All games kick off at 10am, but activities start at 9.30am.  Please make the effort to attend.  It will make a real difference to the young lads for you to give your support.  See Paul Roberts our Youth Development Officer (pictured) with any suggestions or questions

22 Jan 2008 - Club Night - 2s skipper Chris Tilley (pictured) is organising a Club Night at the clubhouse in an effort to raise much needed funds and to bring all teams together.  We request that all Club members young and old stay in the clubhouse on Saturday 2 February LONG after the normal closing time.  We intend to have the bar open until 11pm, so we intend to watch Match of the Day before potentially heading off into Croydon.  Please make every effort to support this event.

The 5s host Civil Service in their SAL Cup Semi Final on 23 February.

The 6s play away in their SAL Cup Semi Final against the winner of the Old Westminster Citizens v HSBC game.  The semi final is scheduled to be played on 9 February.
21 Jan 2008 - Weekend Review - huge excitement in the clubhouse this Saturday with rumours flying about about there being a free bar.  This all started as the results came in.  Myth has it that if all Carshalton FC teams win on a Saturday, then it is a free bar.  However, President Dennis Philpott soon qualified this with the revelation that all 9 teams need to win... and the 1s, 3s, 7s and Vets did not play.

Mind you not a bad set of results for the teams that did play.  The 2s were not at their best but still managed to win 2-0 over a typically spirited Winchmore Hill side to open up a 10 point lead at the top of Division 1.  The 4s won handsomely at Old Wilsonians with 4 goals from Andy Bitmead taking him clear at the top of the scorers chart with 20 so far this season.  The 5s reached the semi final of the SAL Cup by defeating Lloyds TSB in Beckenham.  They will host Civil Service in the semi final on 23 February.

The 6s played some very entertaining football to win 5-0 against second placed Kew Association 5s and put themselves in an excellent position to go for promotion.  The 8s hit top spot in their division with a resounding 7-3 win over Lloyds TSB 8s, helped by a hattrick from Chris Rose.

On Sunday there were a number of very exciting games, the highlight being the U10s first defeat of the season.  In a great advert for youth football both teams had chances to win the game but it was AC Fulham who ran out 1-0 winners.  The U9s showed marked improvement in their defeat and the U11s will be disappointed to have let a 3-1 lead slip.  The U13s overpowered Epsom & Ewell Colts in another enjoyable game to watch.
14 Jan 2008 - Weekend Review - 4 games lost to the weather - the 1s and 7s at Merton, the 2s at Old Actonians and the Vets at the B.B.C.

Mixed results in the games that were played.  The 4s put up a plucky performance in losing narrowly to Division 1 Nottsborough in the quarter final of the SAL Cup.  The 8s also lost narrowly to Bank of England 5s in the league.  The least said about the 5s performance, the better.

The 3s moved 3 points clear at the top of Division 2 with a comprehensive 7-2 win, coupled with Kew's surprise defeat at home to Polytechnic.  Veteran striker Simon Clare grabbed a hattrick and skipper Tony Edwards another 2.

The 6s are through to the semi final of the SAL Cup after an 8 goal romp against Polytechnic.  They face a trip to Old Westminster Citizens and H.S.B.C. in the semi on 9 February.
11 Jan 2008 - Old Sweats Day - this year's Old Sweats Day will be held on Saturday 5th April.  Dennis Philpott (pictured) is the point of contact for anyone interested in attending.  If you need his contact details, please email us at carshaltonfc@hotmail.com and we will send them to you.  This year we are looking for new attendees to join the usual crowd - including the more recent "Old Sweats".

11 Jan 2008 - U10s Semi Final - the U10s play their Invitational Cup semi final against Hampton Youth on Sunday 9 March, KO 10.30am at Cranmore School, Epsom Road, West Horsley, Surrey, KT24 6AT.  Support is most welcome for all Club members.  We wish Dave, Matt and their boys all the best for this game.
7 Jan 2008 - Weekend Review - the 1s were comprehensively outplayed 0-4 by a strong Norsemen unit who move up to second in the table, 9 points behind us but with 3 games in hand.  Significant improvement required for the trip to 3rd placed Merton next week.  The 2s remain 7 points clear at the top of their division after a 3-1 win at Esthameians, with a brace from Shane Bowes moving him to the top of the scorers list with Andy Bitmead of the 4s.  The 3s went top of their division after winning 4-2 at Old Westminster Citizens.

The 4s slipped up as visitors West Wickham took top spot with a 1-5 reverse.  The 5s won comprehensively in the SAL Cup at Old Esthameians helped by 4 goals from John Harris.  They face a trip to Lloyds TSB in the quarter finals in 2 weeks time.  The 6s were disappointed to drop 2 points at home in their promotion push.  The 7s lost narrowly in the AFA Cup at HSBC and the Vets lost in a new fixture at Old Wokingians.  No news of the 8s as yet.

On Sunday there were plenty of goals for our youth teams.  The U9s showed considerable improvement in defeat with AFC Wallington, while the U10s, U11s and U13s all won with varying degrees of comfort.  Congratulations to Connor, James, Ollie (U10s) and to Luke and Simon (U13s) for their hattricks.
4 Jan 2008 - New Years Game - a Carshalton FC Select team overcame a Beddington CC Select team 6-3 in the traditional New Years Day challenge match.  Carshalton goals came from Justin Said (2), Matt Wigham (2), Matt Dudley and Tony Edwards.  Thanks to Beddington CC for fielding a strong side and for their support of this event, to Matt Wigham for organising the Carshalton FC team and also to Charlie Sinclair for refereeing.
