27 Feb 2008 - A
Referee's View - last Saturday I refereed our
4s v Kew Association 4s. It was a spirited game
and a lot closer contested than the 4-0 scoreline
would suggest. During the game, one of Kew's
players, somewhat suffering from the previous night's exertions,
walked to the side of the pitch and proceeded to
double over on his hands and knees emptying his body
of the offending liquid. I won't embarrass the
Carshalton player who asked me to stop the game
"because that geezer is praying to Mecca.
Is he allowed to leave the pitch for that?"!
Well done to Kew's players for hanging round in the
bar and engaging the referee in a bit of banter.
Nice to see the SAL spirit survives. I still put
the booking through though!! - Buzz

Weekend Review - astonishingly the senior
squad had to cope with 15 - yes fifteen players being
unavailable on Saturday. Well done to everyone
who rallied round to ensure we were able to fulfill
our fixtures in these extraordinary
circumstances. Not surprisingly the 1s lost, but
given the circumstances (including Wol's debut in goal
for the 1s), 0-3 was not a disaster. The 2s
pulled off a great result in grabbing a point at
E.B.O.G to maintain their 3 point gap at the top of
the table. The 4s and 5s both had excellent,
crucial wins (Mike Bailie's brilliant hattrick for the
4s being the standout performance of the day).
The 5s win takes them out of the relegation
places. The 7s managed to come back from 1-4
down to draw 4-4 with a scratch side out - including
Charlie Sinclair in goal and Terry Cave senior defying
age and gravity to make a remarkable comeback for the
club.
Unfortunately both the 3s and 6s lost their semi
finals. The 3s were 3-2 up in extra time, but
lost late goals to lose 3-7 at Old Finchleians.
At Beddington Park, the 6s were defeated 0-2 in extra
time - the last goal coming with the last kick of the
game - by a strong Old Wilsonians outfit who belied
their league position and have improved since playing
our 7s earlier in the league.
On Sunday the U11s went down in a close game at Epsom,
while the U10s and U13s had good wins. Special
congratulations to the U9s who had a morale boosting
1-1 draw at AC Fulham. Well done to Neil, Phil
and their boys.

Weekend Review - the 1s lost on their league travels for the first time this season, going down
to fellow promotion hopefuls E.B.O.G on an extremely testing playing surface at Alan Drive
following the drainage works undertaken during the summer.
Indeed, an
injury sustained by Jon Biggle, which resulted in him having to withdraw from
the action in the second half was clearly down to the condition of the
pitch. The worry is that Biggle is likely now to
join the team's other long term casualties, Bill Tilley and Adam Fisk, on the
sidelines for the remainder of the season.
The other results were much better. The 3s
continue to march on at the top of Division 2.
Their win over HSBC stretches the gap at the top to 8
points. The 4s win over HSBC keeps them in
second place. Andy Bitmead's 4 goals takes him 7
clear in the race for the Golden Boot. The 5s
had another encouraging result, but were gutted to
concede 2 goals in the last 3 minutes to drop 2
points, and therefore missed the chance to move off
the foot of the table. The 6s win over fellow
promotion candidates Kew Association puts them firmly
in the promotion places. Rick Morris came into
goalscoring form with a hattrick at just the right
time for the cup semi final this Saturday. And
there was an encouraging win for the 7s, their first
since mid November.
On Sunday the U10s had a bad day at the office at
Hampton Youth and will be looking for significant
improvements when these teams face each other in the
Invitational Cup semi final in 3 weeks time. The
U13s overcame a slow start (2-2 10 minutes into the
second half) to run out 11-3 winners over Kingstonian
Youth in the league.

Weekend Review - after a series of
disappointing results, the 1s at last had a full squad
to chose from and they put in an impressive display to
win 4-2 against fellow promotion candidate Old
Esthameians. The 3s had to wait for an hour
before their game kicked off with Broomfield because
of traffic problems in Carshalton High Street.
The game was reduced to 70 minutes and probably just
as well, as the 3s run in 8 unanswered goals, Matt
Wigham helping himself to 4 before coming off.
Broomfield's day didn't get any better as some
numpties had left the showers running after the 1s and
8s games, so there was no hot water - sorry lads.
The 5s had a great result against 2nd placed Old
Wilsonians, running out 4-1 winners thanks to a
hattrick from John Harris. This leaves the 5s
bottom of the league but surely they will have the
confidence now to go on a bit of a run.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the best performance of
the weekend was the 6s thumping 7-1 win over H.S.B.C.
in the SAL Cup semi final - "easily the best
we've played all season" was the quote from a
jubilant skipper Matt Boyman. Adam Lemon
signalled his return to form with 4 goals and there
was a brace from Fraser Addo. The skipper and
Rick Morris also chipped in. They face Winchmore Hill
who defeated Civil Service 4-1 in their semi final - date and venue to be decided.
You'll get all the news here first.
The 8s managed to get a scratch side out for the visit
of Alleyn Old Boys. On meeting at the clubhouse
it turned out they only had 8 players!
Scrabbling around they eventually managed to get a
full team, though this did include the appointed
referee, who hung up his boots 4 years ago (we could
all see why)! Thanks to Andy Brown for stepping
in to referee at the last minute. The Vets game
was postponed.
On Sunday there were some great performances and
results - 2 wins for the U10s and U11s, a top of the
table draw for the U13s and a narrow defeat for the
U9s - well done to all
8 Feb 2008 - NLS Cup - the SAL Rep side is through to the semi final stage of the FA Carlsberg National League System Cup and therefore just two victories away from European Football as England's representatives in the UEFA Regions Cup, after defeating the Dorset Premier League in a tough quarter final tie played at Potters Bar Town FC. Senior Squad manager Ian Lewis was our representative at the game and his match report is now available

Semi Final Updates - the 3s face Old
Finchleians in North London on 23 Feb. in the SAL Cup
Semi Final.
The 5s host Civil Service in their SAL Cup Semi Final
on 1 March, after the date was moved back a week by
the SAL.
The 6s play away in their SAL Cup Semi Final at HSBC
on 9 February and host Old Wilsonians in the AFA Cup
Semi Final on 23 Feb.
It is quite an outstanding feat to have so many semi
finals this season. Hopefully we can convert
them into silverware this season. Good luck to
all teams
6 Feb 2008 -
Weekend Review - we lost 2 games to the
weather this week. Not surprisingly they were
the 1s game at Merton and the 5s game at South
Bank. There was a mixed bag of results for those
who did play. Firstly the 2s were beaten at home
by a very powerful and determined West Wickham side
cutting our lead at the top of Division 1 to 8 points.
The 4s consolidated their second place in their
division with a 3-1 win at Polytechnic with a hattrick
from Mike Baillie. The 8s were 1-4 down before
bringing it back to 4-4 against Kew Association 9s
before throwing it all away and losing 5-6 - defences
on top as usual. Well done to Jon Smith for
another hattrick - I didn't see anything of the
obligatory jug though! The Vets lost 0-3 at Kew Park
Rangers in a new fixture. Congratulations to
their 24 year old player who scored a hattrick!
There were successes in the cup ties. The 3s
scraped through on penalties against a surprisingly
strong Old Salesians who played well above their
league position. Tony Edwards' penalty miss was
still being debated well into the night. The now
face a trip to Old Finchleians on 23 Feb in the semi
final.
The 6s also came through their AFA Cup quarter final
with Old Meadonians after a thrilling 3-2 win.
Keeper Terry Vinson's late save prevented the game
going into extra time. They have a home tie
against Old Wilsonians in the semi final to be played
on 23 Feb.
On Sunday there were defeats for the U9s and U10s,
while the U13s won a scrappy game to remain top of
their division.
6 Feb 2008 - Club
Night - well done to all who came along to
the Club Night last Saturday. A pity there
weren't more there, but I suppose having 3 teams
without a game meant we would be down on
numbers. That said, we had over 30 in the
clubhouse well past 10pm - indeed lockup wasn't until
11.30pm. Some much needed funds generated and a
good social banter to boot. Look forward to the
next one.
