Surrey Intermediate Cup - 15th November 2003
Godalming and who? - exactly. The old men from Godalming (not that there is anything wrong with old men Keith) were just about able to breath and play long ball for about 15 -20 minutes. Despite shocking the magnificent Cars with an early goal, the oppo were never going to survive a re-born Carshalton side. It seems that Baker and Swany take it in turns to provide a monumental error once a game to give the teams we play a chance. Well your captain and mentor thinks its a sh## idea so stop it!
It did not take long to reply, and who should score? Jonathan Phillips with a well timed leap at the near post after an excellent corner from housewives' favourite Gareth Hobbs. Three goal in three games, Jon - superb!! May I take this moment in the report to remind younger members of the Club that drink driving is not a good idea, especially when the elder members of the side need young wipersnappers to do their running, oh and scoring.
Anyway the rest of the game was not going to slip away this week. Adam Taylor did well to miss a 1 on 1 from close range. Mark Raven had arguably his best game of the season and we were a constant threat from set plays and counter attacks. The most important thing was not to sink to their level and to enjoy the game! We managed both!
The whole team played well. The two subs added to the game when given their chance, particularly Dave Tilley who passed the ball well and scored a toe poke in the second half (as Dave said in the bar after the game, "goalscoring instinct". Nice one Dave). Michael Pickett continued to make good runs and his link up play provided the team with a number of fresh attacks. As soon as Michael gets his first for the higher sides I am sure he will go on to reclaim his Golden Boot. Talking of GOLDEN BOOTS or was that BALLS, if anyone can remember who scored the other 3 goals (or 4) please e-mail the Club as a matter of urgency.
Yours truly
Captain Cook
