SAL - 20th February 2010
After 2 very convincing victories, Cars took the field against Norseman knowing a win would put the destination of the league in their own hands. Having been beaten in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, we knew we were in for a tough game against strong opposition.
The game started with Cars taking early control, passing the ball around without creating any real chances of note. Although having less of the ball, once Norsemen had the ball the attacked with precision and looked dangerous. A couple of timely interceptions kept the game goalless. We also faced several corners and long throws, which caused little alarm.
Midway through the 1st Half Norsemen forced their best chance, a slip in the Cars back line saw the striker race clear but Bruce pulled off a fine save to keep the game scoreless. A couple of other Norsemen shots from distance did little to trouble Bruce and we finished the half 0-0.
A strong team talk from Wiggy left us under no illusions we were 2nd best in the 1st half and that we needed to up our game considerable if we were to get the win we needed. The break seemed to do Cars good as we started the 2nd half with more menace and attacking threat. Full backs Horton and Webb were seeing more of the ball in the opponents half, with Horton in particular linking up with Tilley on the left hand side, causing problems. With Poulier beginning to exert an increasing influence on the game, we gradually gained the upper hand.
The pressure was beginning to tell and we should have taken the lead when Andy Tayor fired over from a Tilley Corner.
The defence continued to look strong and Norsemen were getting little joy from the centre half paring of Reese and Ritchie. This allowed Cars to continue to build and a couple of chances fell to the hard working Adam Toylor, but nothing seemed to be dropping for us and it seemed that we were going to have to settle for a 0-0 draw.
However, more cars pressure led to a string of corners and it was from one of these we forced our winner, Again it was another exceptional delivery from Tilley which caused the damage, with Andy Taylor heading in from close range. We held out for the remaining 2 minutes to secure victory.
On balance I think we just about deserved the victory. With 6 games left, we know that winning them all will see us championsTom Ritchie
