AFA Intermediate Cup - 9th November 2002

This week our opponents were Old Aloysians who won this cup last year and knocked us out in the semis.  It was not going to be an easy game and in the end it turned into an epic game, which will not be forgotten easily.  The first half started well for us with our defence keeping Old Aloysians out and our attackers creating mayhem with Jason scoring the first, Stuart scoring the second from the spot and Paul skidding in to score the third.  At half time we were cruising and Charlie words were “We can score three so can they”.  Those words were very much true.

The pace of the game intensified with the passing from both sides being quick, accurate and very deadly.  Should I say our passing was dangerous.  It was just our opponents throw-ins that were deadly, with them having at least 6 players over 6 foot compared to no 6 footers in our team.  With about 25 minutes to go we went 4-1 up with Jason curling the ball into the bottom right hand side of the goal giving the keeper no chance.

Than all hell let loose.  Our opponents made an inspired substitution (another 6 footer, who some say looked like Grant Mitchell).  The ball was hurled in and bang it was headed in.   Another throw in, another flick on, another goal, made it 4-2.  We lost complete control and struggled to compete in the air.  We made it 5-2, with all going on I cannot remember who scored this one (Dean said it was JW with a left foot curl but that can’t be right)!!!

A mystery.  We was 5-2 up when Jocky came on for Chewitt.  What happened?  You guessed it, they scored straight away to make it 5-3.  Must be 10 minutes left at 5-3 when a superb header from just outside our box beat the oncoming Danny which lopped high and in to the top left hand of our goal.  The only problem was it was an own goal from yours truly.  Thank God I couldn’t hear Charlie.  I can only imagine what he was saying. (I got slated in the shower though)

With minutes to go, another long throw and another flick on from Grant Mitchell and you guessed it another goal making the full time score 5-5.  Our heads were down.  We all knew we threw away a lead which we should not have let slip.  It happens - look at Spurs last year cruising at 3-0 at half time and lose 5-3 to Man U at full time.  At least we came off level.

Extra time was played and whilst James was elbowed in the face and carried of injured (no subs left) we conceded another goal but within minutes and change of formation to 3-4-2 we had levelled to 6-6.  The last 15 minutes of play was mental but 4 GOAL SCORING MACHINE JASON WINYARD SCORED OUR 7TH GOAL, CONNECTING TO A GREAT PASS (well a header from Edwards) FROM SIX YARDS WINNING THE GAME FOR US 7-6.  Jason's been getting some remarks about missing chances but today he certainly answered the critics (namely D.E.A.N)

Tony may not have scored but was involved with most our attacking play and Paul and Stuart down the flanks were creating a lot of chances attacking-wise but did get back to defend when called on (quite a lot).

The spirit and determination is high in the 2s.  Most teams would have folded going 6-5 down from 5-2 up with 10 men on the pitch.  We fought back to be triumphant and place our name in the next round.
