SAL - 24th January 2004

After two successive league defeats, Carshalton returned to winning ways with this emphatic victory at Beddington Park on Saturday against it has to be said a rather disappointing Old Latymerians side.

Straight from the start of this game Cars laid siege to their opponents penalty box with the opening goal soon looking inevitable.  The opener duly arrived as early as the 8th minute when the Old Lats’ keeper fumbled a Steve Powell free kick whereupon Tony Edwards took advantage to stab home from close range.  Having seen the home team take the lead, Old Lats just minutes later had their only chance of the half, but the 30 yard effort from their centre forward flew well wide of the right hand upright.  Cars doubled the lead on 26 minutes with undoubtedly the move of the game.  A long pass upfield from the heart of defence saw the ball brilliantly taken down on his chest by the closely marked Paul Pearce who then found Stuart Jefferys on the right wing whose superb first time cross to the far post was met by Edwards, who having taken a touch, converted yet again from close range.  Cars were now rampant and added a third goal on the half hour mark when a long throw launched into the box from Jefferys saw Steve Powell the beneficiary of some poor defending, burying his chance from 8 yards out.  Just 5 minutes later and the game as a contest was over after Old Lats were again undone by the long throw of Jefferys, the recipient this time Michael Pickett who finished from inside the six-yard box.  The last significant action of the very one sided first half saw Gary Cummings come close to snatching a fifth for Cars when he skillfully chipped the keeper, the ball though coming back off the bar and being cleared by the right back.

Old Lats looked much brighter after the break and for a while put the home side on the back foot, but the couple of half chances they created were squandered.  With an hour gone Cars scored again when Pearce won a free kick on the edge of the area.  Cummings stepped forward and taking advantage of a poorly constructed Old Lats’ wall bent his kick beyond the keeper and inside the left post.  Although Cars continued to apply pressure on the Old Lats' back line, their final ball that had been so effective in the first half now seemed to lack the same conviction.  However, Cars did score another goal 5 minutes from time when Cummings beat the keeper from fully 30 yards with a curling shot into the top corner of the net.  The final whistle sounded with Cars knowing they had taken their foot off the pedal somewhat in the second period, letting the away side off the hook and saving them from a likely double figure defeat.

Both skipper Dean Tomlinson and boss Tony Edwards will welcome this victory, but equally will take much satisfaction from the clean sheet having seen the side concede nine goals in the last two games. The MOM this week is an easy call to make and goes to Tony Edwards who proved a right handful for the Old Lats’ defence from start to finish.
