SAL Intermediate Section Division 1 - 15 March 2008
After yet another week off and losing top spot to Nottsborough in the process we were looking to bounce back with 3 points to keep our title hopes alive. After seeing Nottsborough smash 4 past Civil last week there were questions over the strength of the Civil side.
Once again injuries had taken its toll on the senior squad, and a depleted 2nd team arrived in good spirits to the true home of football Beddington Park!
With Jon sporting his new car after recently passing his test and his confidence high after a spectacular first goal of the season on the previous outing the usual banter was restored. The enforcer arrived with a greeting of one finger (Cheers mate), that seem to be his mind set for the day, aggressive!
Adam once again sporting the same clothes as last night and looking like he had slept in a doorway, which later turned out to be what he had done somewhere in Clapham!
For the 2nd game in a row a young keeper would be in trusted between the sticks, the last one though ended up in a compromising position with the Skipper and strangely enough this one was going the same way, with Tilley eagerly volunteering to pick him up!! Watch out Garth hope he didn’t do anything strange to you on the journey!!
The journey to Chiswick was boring and slow with a number of red lights taken by the back car! Sorry boys, will be more considerate next time but I'm not taking any points!
On arrival at the ground over the hill was a nice Jaguar which appeared to have a red flame out of the passenger seat roof, as it approached slowly it was Kev?? Mystery was had by all!! As his usual mode of transport was an old bashed up car by his disgruntled school kids!!
Pitch side we were greeted with a changing room with no lights and no windows so Chris suggested that we all get changed anyway to which he put his stuff next to the new young keeper and blamed the dark each time he accidentally touched him! The Civil official arrived and tried to get the power working but with no luck!
Skipper Tilley gave a rousing speech before kick off about starting fast and getting the early goal which I can only say stirred the passion like Henry V’s Agincourt Speech!!
As a team we started quickly and within 5 mins we had the lead Adam picked the ball up inside our own half down the left! Beating three players on the way to the by line he swung a great ball over. Having a snap shot Sam crashed it back across goal for Martin to hook home a true poacher’s goal!
The enforcer and Baggie continued to dominate midfield, with the back 4 looking assured more goals were surely to come! This time a hopeful ball from Sam over the top made the centre half turn and chase towards his own area, trying to smash it clear Martin blocked the clearance and spotting the keeper off his line lobbed him from a full 35 yards! 2 goals in the first 20 mins should have settle Cars and let them play comfortable football for the rest of the game.
This was not to happen, a string of needless fouls on the half way line let Civil continue to pump the ball long into the Cars' box to keep the pressure up. The game became a little scruffy during the remainder of the half and with 30 secs left the ball bobbled around on the edge of the Cars box and fortunately fell to the surprised Civil centre forward. Skipper Tilley making a great challenge from the side managed to get a piece of the ball and clear. As the Civil striker picked himself up and dusted himself down, much to his surprise and the rest of the pitch the ref had pointed to the spot!! The resulting penalty was placed in the bottom corner with Garth making a fantastic effort to almost get there!
Before we had chance to restart the whistle had gone for half time, with the score not really reflecting the balance of play and possession during the first half! The half time talk was to carry on with much of the same as the first half!
Once again we started quickly with nearly all the ball and winning everything in midfield. Sam was getting more involved in the game and once again Adam picked up the ball and run the length of the pitch to slide the ball across the area with Martin stepping over the ball as he was taken out by both keeper and full back left Sam free at the back post to slide into an empty net!
Once again surely this should signal a relaxed end to the game! Cars kept the ball and played numerous balls through and around the tiring old Civil back line and a string of saves from the Civil keeper kept the score down.
With 15 minutes left on the clock Sam slide a perfectly weighted ball through the back line for Martin to run on to with just the keeper to beat he coolly and calmly waited for the right moment to pass the ball in to the bottom corner and complete his hattrick.
There was to be one remaining goal in the game with Civil pumping the ball forward and using their centre half as an extra striker he managed to find himself in space and lob the ball past the advancing Cars keeper.
All in all a good result for Cars with fellow title chasers Nottsborough only managing a draw against bottom of the table Wilsonians means we are now level at the top with a game in hand and only three to play!! To quote a famous line “its now squeeze your bum’s time”!!
Captain Tilley was reported seen later on that even pretending to have ear phones on and being interviewed saying “I’d just love it really love it if we beat them to the title”!
