Carshalton 3rd XI

SAL – 29th September 2002

In the end a resounding defeat for a game 3rd XI, but a performance which provides some considerable optimism for the season. There will undoubtedly be few stronger sides in the division than an extremely well organised and competitive West Wickham team.

The first 35 minutes were well matched with Ryan Polley, James ? and even Dave Jenvey (against his old side) all going close for Cars.  But it was Wickham who opened the scoring, capitalising on a lapse in the Cars defence to slot one in on the far post.  At that stage the game was still well balanced.

Unfortunately a minute before half time Matthew Huffer was again on the score sheet - but this time at the wrong end, and far more spectacular than his effort the week before, this time flying through the air to divert a cross into his own net.  Luckily for him Graham Polley's reaction was inaudible!

This could have knocked the stuffing out of Cars but to our credit we plugged on and in hitting the bar twice in the second half (Jamie Fash and Ryan Polley both going close) we were unlucky not to get one back.  Notable performances of the week from Jamie Fascione who made his season's debut with a tenacious performance in the centre of midfield, Gareth Banton who looked at home in a new wide right berth and a man of the match performance from Mark Lowther playing in an unaccustomed left back role.  Keeper Lee also had a fine match.

The scoring was finished off by a break away goal by Wickham.  So despite a sound beating, Cars left with their heads high and hope for a victory this week against Bank of England at home.
