AFA Junior Cup Qualifying Round – 12th October 2002

A solid if unremarkable win in the qualifying round of the cup for Graham Polley's men and boys.  In truth this game was a slight mis-match and Cars could have won by 4 or 5.  However with only 10 minutes left on the clock the score board was still blank (Gary Cummings 2nd minute headed goal rightly adjudged a foul) and defensive nerves were beginning to jangle.  The deadlock was broken by the very promising combination of Nick Jeffrey and Jonathan Phillips on the left.  Nick's long flat throw found the diminutive Phillips unmarked on the six yard line where he headed home his first of the season, having returned from a summer injury.

Man of the match Gary Cummings had possibly his best run out for the 3s.  Playing up front alongside Dave Robins he has added some steel to his deft touches and is becoming a useful target foil for Dave.  It was Mr. Robins who popped up with 5 minutes left on the clock to crack in his first of the season, an unstoppable drive from 25 yards from right to left.  Solid performances also from Gareth Banton and the returning from hols Dave Jenvey.  Danny Garcia has mentioned that he's bored in the sticks behind Matthew Huffer and the ever dependable Dick Polley...long may that continue.

Tough league match away to Old Salesians next week.
