AFA Junior Cup – 2 November 2002

This was not a strong BBC side, but they still had to be turned over.  An impressive 6-1 win for Graham Polley's men and boys puts them through to the second round of the AFA Junior Cup. The game was really over as a serious contest within 25 minutes, by which time man of the match Jonathan Phillips had helped himself to a hat-trick from left midfield.  All three goals were the result of crosses from the right.  One a corner, supplied by the equally impressive left back Nick Jeffrey, and the other two the result of marauding runs by Gareth 'The Engine' Banton.

BBC had a brief sniff of a chance in the game when the usually faultless Dick 'Baresi' Polley attempted a flicked back pass (which he failed).  The game was really won in the centre of midfield where Dave Jenvey and Alex Booker exerted an iron grip over their opposite numbers, mixing tough no nonsense tackling with deft touches.  In fact Dave almost broke his Carshalton goal scoring virginity but was denied by a decent stop.  Soon after Dave's close encounter with the score-sheet, the outstanding Gary Cummings finished his 3rd one-on-one with the keeper to make it 4-1 to Cars.

With 20 minutes left on the clock Graham introduced 'legend in his own wet dream' Ryan Polley to the action.  He duly scored with his first contribution, collecting a long punt by keeper Dan Garcia to slide one under the oncoming BBC keeper.  Ryan then added another with a header at the back post.  This was from a delightful cross from Dave Robins and represented the only time in the game when Dave didn't shoot when he got the ball within 30 metres of the goal!

So a decent win for Cars but two interesting league ties coming up at home against BB Eagles and Broomfield.  These will determine if this is to be an OK or decent season for Cars.
