SAL – 16 November 2002
An extremely satisfactory league win for the 3s, taking us into the top 4 with a game still in hand. The result of this match sounds closer than the game actually was, with both of Broomfield's consolation goals coming in the final hectic 3 minutes. Cars found themselves 3-0 up at half time due to some superb first time football and some poor finishing from a disappointing Broomfield side. Interestingly a large Broomfield side were undoubtedly muscled out of the game by Cars, showing that the team is coming to terms with this higher more physical standard. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the centre of midfield where Dave 'the enforcer' Jenvey and a livewire Alex Booker were dominant.First half goals came from the boots of first Ryan Polley (playing extremely well at an unaccustomed left back), Jonathan Phillips and Gary Cummings. Ryan's was a cross that he mis-hit, Jonathan's was a sweetly struck left footer from 15 yards and Gary's was the final finish to a beautifully flowing move which had involved 5 Cars players en-route. Within 5 minutes of the re-start Cars had added a fourth. The Broomfield right back misjudged a long punt by keeper Danny Garcia and Jonathan Phillips snuck in behind him to put the game beyond the North London side's reach.
The match then degenerated, as some petty fouls and off the ball incidents (mostly involving Gareth Banton - who got booked for upending his opposite number with ball nowhere in sight!) led to a disjointed final 30 minutes.
This was probably Graham Polley's last game in charge of the 3s this season as he bows out due to work commitments - thanks to Graham for all his help. Mark Lowther takes over with Matthew Huffer and Dave Jenvey assisting and let's hope that the successful start to the season continues. The crucial ingredient will undoubtedly be everyone's continuing availability so let's please keep that going.
