Carshalton 3rd XI

7 Dave Robins 2, Ryan Polley 2, Alex Booker, Trevor Boughton, Jonathan Phillips

Lloyds TSB Bank

2

SAL – 30 November 2002

A great start for Dave Jenvey and Matthew Huffer in their first game as the new 3s management duo.  The return to the fold of Trevor Boughton and Neil Edwards also gave a sense of stability to proceedings.  The sides had appeared well matched in the first half, Cars edging ahead at 2-1 by the interval.

However in the second half the Lloyds TSB Bank back line parted like the Red Sea to allow a marauding quartet of Jonathan Phillips, Gareth Banton, Dave Robins and Ryan Polley (in his best game this season) to overrun the visitors time and again.  Ryan Polley opened the scoring with a searing drive from the edge of the box.  The visitors quickly replied though as Dick Polley and Matt Huffer were exposed for pace on the break.  Trevor Boughton completed the first half scoring rising like a tuna on the back post to head home a perfectly flighted Robins corner.  As has often been the case this season we win when we manage to dominate the central midfield area.  This was the case on Saturday as Dave Jenvey and Alex Booker (MOM) were magnificent. Our 2-1 lead swiftly became 5-1 as Ryan Polley, Dave Robins and Alex Booker added further goals.  Dave's was the pick of these as he sprinted from the half way line to fire home.  Jonathan Phillips executed a perfect volley from outside the box to make it 6-1 before a late consolation for Lloyds Bank beat the extremely competent Dave Aldridge (our 5th keeper of the season).  Dave Robins rounded off the scoring to take Carshalton into 3rd place in the league with a game in hand.

A quick word on discipline...............................Unfortunately the Club's poor disciplinary record means that the Committee have this season elected to ban players from the match following the one in which they are booked, in an effort to clean up our act.  As such Alex Booker has to miss next weeks match following a late booking for a mis-timed tackle.  Gareth Banton and Gary Cummings have also fallen foul of this rule so far this season.  I have sympathy with Alex as his tackle was part and parcel of playing in central midfield.  However both Gareth and Gary were booked for off the ball incidents, for which I have no sympathy.  This season we've allowed lots of petty dissent, squaring up to opposition players when tackled and general childishness to creep into our play.  This needs to stop because it's pathetic.  We can be competitive without resorting to the above.  If that's the way you want to play your football, then Sunday mornings offer plenty of what you're after.  Enough said

Matt Huffer
