SAL – 7 December 2002
A second successive demolition of poor league opposition consolidates Cars as second in the league, and sets up a belter at home to West Wickham next week; the only side to have beaten us this season and who currently occupy top spot. As was widely predicted Old Stationers do not travel well. They were a rag tag side compared with the organised team we met (and drew with) first game of the season. Arriving late, with no kit and only 9 men for the first 10 minutes Cars hit them hard early on. With just 25 minutes on the clock it was 5-1 to Cars and the game was dead. What was particularly pleasing this week was the spirit with which we approached the game. No moaning at the ref or trying to pick fights with opposition players. Jonathan Phillips opened the scoring (the first of a hat-trick) with a sweetly struck left footer. He completed his hat-trick with the last goal of the match, heading in a Gareth Banton cross from the right on the back stick. Stuart Jeffrey got his first goal for the 3s following a marauding run from right back and completed with a scuffed cross shot into the far corner.
Man of the match Dave Robins bagged a brace and also hit the bar twice. Best goal of the season came from left back Trevor Boughton who elected to shoot from 30 yards rather than deliver a cross and ended up hitting a screamer into the roof of the net (much to the disdain of the watching Neil Edwards, who having just that minute arrived, guessed that he'd be hearing much much more of the strike later in the bar!).
The other strike was by the vastly improved Gary Cummings who is having an outstanding season, and who this week robbed the keeper to slot home. The last two weeks certainly haven't been a good barometer of whether or not we're a good side. That will be clear following the top of the table clash with West Wickham next week.
