SAL – 25 January 2003
Unfortunately we've got out of the habit of winning games. Having won 5 in a row, we've now lost 4 in a row in an extremely tight division. Against a strong Old Esthameians side, this was our best performance for some weeks, and we were only 1-0 behind until the final 3 minutes, when in a bid to snatch a point we left ourselves open at the back.We took the bare 11 to East London which was always a risk. This was made to look like pure folly as Gareth Banton had to hobble off after 25 minutes and we had to play the remainder of the game a man down. Still we might have nicked a point had we at 1-0 down been given a cast iron penalty as an Old Esthameians defender stuck an arm out to prevent man of the match Jay Bream from slotting home. Everyone in the ground saw it including most of the Old E's first team who were standing in the bar some 60 metres away. In hindsight we should not have been surprised, as the ref was poor throughout, compounding his late arrival and the 2.30 eventual kick off.
I'd say though that we can take a lot of heart from this performance. For the most part it was backs to the wall stuff with fighting performances from lone striker Dave Robins, Alex Booker and Dave Jenvey (who you'd have read elsewhere played for the final 10 minutes with a fractured ankle!).
A win would be very welcome, as in fact would a point! Fingers crossed for this Saturday which will see the return of Neil Edwards to the role of midfield general!
