SAL Division 2 - 14th January 2006

On this cold and cloudy Saturday afternoon, the 3s took to the first team pitch looking for two out of two wins in the new year. With a strong team including a famous face in goal (the monk from Mean Machine) Lee Measure, this turned into a fantastic game to watch.

The away team started stronger putting away two goals in 15 minutes with a lucky header that dropped into the bottom corner and a strike which any striker would be happy with. It seemed to be that Carshalton had not woken up yet but their heads never dropped and fought back with spirit.  A free kick from the left hand side was whipped in and up popped Paul Neil with a cracking header that put Cars right back in it. With tackles flying in Cars pushed forward with Gooders and Fisky playing some great football looking for something special from Taylor and Simon upfront. And then it came.  A deep run from the left hand side led to Westminster's number 13 making a silly tackle to give away a free kick roughly about 22 yards outside of the box.  Now with a team of players that take free kicks for a living there was only one man who was going to have this one.  With one goal to his name this season Chris Wells stepped up, bent the free kick in with power and pace right into the right side of the goal leaving the keeper with no chance at all.  So from two nil down we were all level again.  The game was end to end and even though it was level there looked some tiring legs out there. Then an attack by the opposition down the right led to another lucky goal but well struck, the right winger had made a decent run cut inside a laid it off to his team-mate who struck a nice shot.  As 'The Monk' went to tip it over, it bent at the last second (must have been the wind) and dropped into the net.  This resulted in the 3s going in 3-2 down at half time.

Tony Knott must have had an inspirational talk with the lads at half time and decided on not bringing anyone off.  It took about ten minutes for the away team to find their way with Cars running riot.  They were pegged back with a long ball over the top.  Their forward managed to get to the ball trotted into the penalty area-now this is where the incident happened. As the forward knocked the ball on out came the keeper to retrieve the ball.  As he did, Wellsy caught the striker and the ref decided on a penalty.  Now in my eyes even though I'm not a referee I see no penalty there as the striker didn't have the ball.  Anyway on with the game, number 10 stood up and sent the keeper the wrong way with a good penalty. 4-2 down with about twenty five mins on the clock, Chris Warren and Nick Ruthen have been quality this season with lots of running and the odd goal here and there.  After Wozza's goal last week you wouldn't have put money on him doing it again.  Well guess what?  He did.  Chris cut inside their full back and somehow unleashed a tame strike that gave the keeper no chance lobbing him from 20 yards- nice one woz (keep it up, two out of two).  Still more good work from Simon and Taylor upfront holding the ball up well setting up chances for Gooders, Wellsey and Fisk. Nick Denny just back from injury seemed to be holding well, making some important tackles and some decent runs. Knotty decided on a change with 15 mins to go.  Paul Neil made way for 'El Toro' the young Spaniard Chris Thompson who was carrying a knock but played on.  He went to right back and Matt Dudley took to the right wing. With some lovely turns and some nice play with Matt it led to a lovely ball 30 yard ball fed from the back down the right hand side.  This led Matt to keep up the pressure and that he did, as he brought the ball down he aimed to flick the ball past their towering centre back the opposition stuck out his hand and the ref gave a penalty. Up came Chris Wells, a booking for their centre back for applauding was given.  Up stepped Wellsey and absolutely hammered the ball past the keeper. 4-4 with not much time on the clock.  Chances were falling left, right and centre, with Simon's long throws causing havoc, Dudders, Gooders, Fisky and Taylor all looking to pop up with something fantastic. It just wouldn't happen for the boys in green.

So with 5 minutes on the clock, Cars got a corner.  Up came 'The Monk' and everyone packed the box.  A wicked corner from Simon aiming for anyone and everyone was deflected off Wells onto 'The Monk'.  Wells drilled it in to the bottom corner making it 5-4 to Cars, celebrations all round ended up with a bundle leading to Fisky getting cramp. 5-4 it ended and with Knotty and the lads over the moon, that wins takes us to third in the league so a push for promotion looks on the cards.
