SAL Division 2 - 11th February 2006

Now what can we say about this game, lots of controversial decisions, three harsh bookings, Nick Denny's nutmeg and another great performance that ended in defeat. This week we missed James Holland, Simon Clare and 'The Monk' but returns for Chris Thomo and Adam Fisk made up for it.

With a great start to the game, Cars put the pressure on and chances were being created. Ryan Polley and Jack Goodman starting up front came close to putting the 3s ahead but the opposition with a fairly strong defence put up a barrier closing out everything that came in. Now to Nick Denny's nutmeg well what can I say... after being hassled down the right Nick decided to take it upon himself to give some back and after twisting and turning he cheekily nutmegged the left winger after running him senseless then played the ball to Dudders, then giving a cheeky laugh and grin he stormed in to another tackle thus winning the ball. Most of the play was coming from the right-hand side through Matt Dudley and Polley both of them took the chance to run at the left back and were successful put chances again fell and fell but nothing going Cars way.

Chris Thomo played in goal as our keeper could not make it and he made a contribution with a great save in the first half after the opposition found a gap in the 3s defence, there were some other decent chances for the away team which should have been offside but weren't called by the ref. Ryan Polley was on the end of a yellow card for speaking to the ref, Polley wanted to know what the foul was for thus receiving a booking. So with a fairly good half, Cars came in for Tony's half time talk. I on the other hand decided it was time for a cup of Mary Lee as it was getting a bit nippy.

So to the second half that, from a player and supporter of the fantastic game, was extremely controversial. It didn't take long for the chances to fall to either team, Fisky making some wonderful runs, made some great passes and were unlucky again not to go 1 up. Now for some of the major talking points, it came half way into the second half with challenges flowing, Crouch End played a ball over the top with Earl the last man their centre forward was at least 3 yards behind him thus being offside, anyway he ran onto it rounding El Thomo in the goal and forcing the ball into the far side of the goal leaving Nick Ruthen hanging in the net. But it didn't take long for the lads to nearly get back in it, Gooders and Polley played some lovely one twos off each other and Polley played a nice ball through with Jack a mile onside the ref blew his whistle giving offside. Three fouls in 10 minutes gave the game some frustration as Fisky was taken out off the ball after some nice play, Chris Warren was pulled back after making the right back look silly and Nick Ruthen was scythed down on the edge of the box. P.S. yes you guessed it did the ref give any of these fouls to us??? Another great save from Thomo kept us in it again the forward tried to take the Spaniard on and failed with the keeper taking the ball away with pleasure. Another great game from the back four, Chris Wells and Earl showing a good partnership with the two Nicks performing well. Two more bookings were added to the collection, Wellsey for apparently blocking the keeper, not to mention the ref did not see that the keeper was outside the box at least four yards with the ball still in his hands. And Gooders who managed to pick up a booking for not being 10 yards away from the free kick even though he had his back to the ball and was walking away from it. Polley came close twice more making the target twice forcing the keeper to make a save. This just wasn't the 3's day and the final whistle blew. Next time is there any chance of us picking up Collina as he has retired??

Man of the Match
This week we took it to them battling for everything, Earl had a strong game at the back winning most in the air, Matt Dudley made some gasping runs but this week Fisky takes the honours as he made some dangerous play, making some important passes and putting pressure down the necks of the opposition.

Attendance was up this week as I spotted at least 10 watching at some point in the game. Next week away at Old Esthameians a must win game.
