SAL Division 2 - 17th March 2007
Carshalton made the long trip north minus 6 of there regular players, leading to a recall for former skipper Wol, and a first start of the season for Kirknall. Despite these minor problems, Cars were in confident mood after two convincing wins, which going into the game saw them sitting top of the league.
The first half began and Cars looked nothing like league leaders, barely able to string a pass together. This was partly due to the poor playing surface, partly to do with the fact we had no time for warm up, and also probably a little to do with over confidence and an expectancy to walk away with a victory. Having gone close with a couple of chance (both of which Wol pulled off brilliant saves to his credit) we concede a relatively sloppy goal. One of their midfielders broke, no one tracked back, Wol saved, they tapped in, no more than we deserved, and to be fair it could have been far worse. The goal did stir us slightly. Ryan Polley had a couple of decent half chances, we won a few corners and threatened with a couple off free kicks and finished the half the better team.
With the half time team talk still ringing in the ears we won a free kick just outside the box. The ball was swung over and Tony Edwards nodded in unmarked at the back post. We started playing a bit and created a couple of half chances. However Crouch End struck next, a good cross from their right was met with what was in fairness an excellent header into the top corner. Unlike their first, it was completely against the run of play. We picked ourselves up quickly and Gary Cummings ran onto an excellent through ball before slotting coolly past the on rushing keeper. Jon Harris then won and scored a penalty to take us into the lead; no more than we deserved. Ryan Polley put some space between the teams, timing his run to perfection before calmly placing the ball past the keeper. With their team arguing amongst themselves Tony Edwards capitalised by racing (lowly) clear of the large centre back and again beating the keeper.
All in all we deserved the win and it was vital if we are to get something out of this season. Coming from behind twice emphasises the spirit within the team at the minute. Earlier in the season we probably wouldn’t have got anything from the game. We have 2 games left and if we win both we should hopefully get promoted.
