SAL – 26 October 2002
A very scrappy game and not much in it for the stalwart supporters at Beddington Lane but a deserved win on the balance of chances created. There's no doubt that West Wickham are a strong club and their 4s had some excellent young players. These youngsters couldn't however match the experienced know-how of Jocky, Matthew Huffer, Trevor Boughton and Stevie Tait....all players who know how to close down those big games.Cars went in at half time 2-1 up. Jay has recently been promoted from the 5s, and the big man showed a ballerina's balance in the box as his twinkle toes helped him round players to notch both Cars goals. The Wickham goal (a consolation as it transpired) came from the penalty spot after Trevor Boughton took out a striker as he was baring down on goal. Stevie Tait was denied a certain goal in the closing seconds of the first half as the keeper scooped the goal back from behind the goal line.
A tight second half saw Ryan Polley and Jay squander a couple of decent chances each before Jay latched onto a Jocky through ball to calmly slot home his impressive hat-trick. With 20 minutes to go we made two substitutions. Cue for Ryan to promptly get injured and for the side to be down to ten men. Then with 15 minutes left on the clock a minor scuffle in the centre of the park led to Stevie 'Keano' Tait being harshly red carded for doing absolutely nothing.
Man of the match was undoubtedly keeper and skipper Danny Glennister who was outstanding. He dominated his box and collected everything in the air keeping out late pressure from Wickham. That's two wins on the trot for the improving 4s.
