Carshalton 4th XI |
1 | Danny Berry |
SAL – 22nd November 2003
Nottsborough got out of Jail. We were leading one-nil through a Danny Berry thunderbolt from the halfway line until the 83rd minute and contrived to lose 2:1 without the need for extra time. Very disappointing. Whether it was 'stage fright' at leading to the 'mighty' Nottsborough I do not know but we could have won. We even had another goal attempt cleared off the line.
Not the greatest of starts to a match with majority of the team turning up late, no kit!!! and insufficient time for a proper team talk or warm up...
We deliberately played five across the midfield in an attempt to stifle their attacks, which worked well. After a couple of scares we still had one or two good break-aways and chances. Everybody worked very hard in the rainy / windy conditions. 0-0 at half time...
Second half, we continued the hard work containing Nottsborough but our break-aways proved more and more effective with us eventually changing to 4-4-2 formation in an attempt to go on and win the game. Then came Danny's howitzer - not a lot different from Beckham's goal against Wimbledon all those years ago. We went 1-0 up. I genuinely thought we could go on and win. Instead everybody got a bit nervous, forgot all the good things they had been doing and we let them equalise. Right on the full time whistle Nottsborough scored the winner. A few of us including myself should have got a tackle in to stop the player running across the penalty area.
As I say, Nottsborough got out of jail.
I sincerely hope that the 4s learn from the game as with a bit more experience and composure they would have gone on to win that game.
I would like to thank Messrs Trevor Boughton, Dick Polley, Danny Berry, Terry Vinson who guested from the sixth team and to be fair put up a good show...
Look forward to next week.
