AFA Minor Cup – 24th September 2005
Two late goals sinks 4th teamA strong if not much changed 4th team travelled to Chislehurst Sports. Unfortunately we were given the wrong address so turned up to the final destination shortly before kick off. Fortunately the referee agreed a 3pm kick off. Despite not having time to warm up, do a team talk, etc we started off very well, controlling the game. A number of Friday night drop outs caused havoc to the team sheet with Messrs Smith and Polley being called up late, both acquitting themselves very well.
Elliott Stevens, having found out he doesn't start University till Monday, started and scored a good goal in the first half. Both he and Alex caused problems to the home sides defence but couldn't quite get a second or third which our play deserved. We were all very impressed with Earl playing the holding role in midfield. His touch was good to see.
Both Ross's played well and Tommy at left back making his full debut got stronger as the game went on. THEN WE GOT TO HALF TIME
I didn't change the team because we were going so well and I was delighted with the way the squad players were playing. All I can say is that the opposition were a very experienced team, lifted their game after the interval and we stopped doing the things we were doing well in the first half. They equalised quickly and soon went 2-1 up. Andy Bitmead then entered the fray and got an equalising header.
2:2 and the game was going to extra time so I held back on making any further subs. Then they hit us with two late goals. Unfortunately whilst Jason is a good lad and a good keeper he is not the tallest and the opposition (finally worked out the art of chipping). They put in a couple of high balls plus a curling chip top corner which he could never get to.
I then brought T and Dean on. I can only apologise as they only had a couple of minutes to do something.
Disappointing but a vast improvement on the previous weekend's performance.
PS would like to add that the game was played in a great spirit no bookings and refereed to a very high standard (I was watching from the side lines). I am sorry I could not play. I was running the Windsor Half marathon which I completed in just over 2 hrs yesterday.
Good luck to Swanny in the Amsterdam half marathon that's if he can keep out of the brothels!
