SAL Division 4 - 11th February 2006
Last Saturday saw the arrival of top of the league Old Actonians to the hallowed turf that is Beddington Park 1st team pitch, and the bright but bleary eyed team put in a worthy performance.
The first half we started at a good tempo and moved the ball around the pitch well. The ever improving Chris French started showing what his new boots could do and Lee Byrne was winning and spreading possession admirably. It was a swift passing move through midfield that then allowed Frenchie to slide a through ball between the centre halves. 20 yards out with an awful lot still to do, and the wise pre-match words of HMS Paterson still ringing in his ears, Dave Fenton (later to be substituted for John Merrick - the Elephant Man) smashed the ball left footed across the keeper and into the far corner.
Soon after, and still without a serious threat to our goal, Lee Byrne produced what can only be described as a moment of sheer genius (it's amazing what happens when the family's down to watch!). With the crowd still muttering about the possible goal of the season already witnessed, Byrne received a square ball 28.5yards out and lashed it first time right footed. The ball appeared to deflect off two defenders before being blown by a gust of wind just inside the post - this was after my severe head injury so my memory may be a little hazy, but the story was later verified by striking sensation Steve Smith.
2-0 at half time, as it had been at the reverse fixture earlier in the season when we snatched a last gasp 2-2 draw. This time however, Kirknall, HMS Paterson, Tom P and Benito were clam tight and made a very easy afternoon for The Bear in goal.
The final goal came through a clumsy challenge on Jon Harris. The defender was surely sick of watching Bomber cut past him over and over again and decided a rash challenge was probably the best way to deal with him. Harris converted the penalty himself with a cool finish to the keeper's right to make it 12 for the season.
The rest of the game was spent defending quite deep but solidly and we recorded our 2nd clean sheet on the spin. All in all one of our best performances of the season, as confirmed by Wol in the clubhouse afterwards who was heard to claim he'd "pay good money to see that again". It has been rumoured he was actually talking about Friday night rather than Saturday afternoon - this remains unclear.
No MOM this week as I can't remember who was good in the 1st half and all 13 had a tremendous 2nd half. Promotion? Cup final? I don't see why not.......
