SAL Division 2 - 11th November 2006

A very poor performance.  Considering we had 3 previous Golden Boot winners in the side we lacked goals.  The ref made it very hard for us after awarding a penalty 10 minutes into the first half.  Michael Gibson was fouled clearly in the corner of the box and whilst the striker fell to the floor as if he had been shot the ref was pointing to the spot.  Nigel in goal was sent the wrong way by a low drive that put us 1 down.  We were the better side at the time and wasted several chances.  I thought that we would bounce back as we have done in recent weeks.  Didn't happen.

We lost Michael through an ankle injury with 6 minute to go in the first half and the Wolf Man (D Hewitt) came on as sub.  We didn't seem to be getting our fair share of the "50/50" decisions, and thank goodness for Kew's sporting behaviour in correcting many of the ref's decisions for him.  Fair play!   It was good that the ref was able to laugh and joke with the Kew players at half time!

More chances went begging in the second half and cards were dished out like sweets.  James Chambers and Danny Hewitt got yellows for stupid tackles and the other side received 3.  It is disappointing to record that games which are played at our standard and in excellent spirit by both sides should result in so many cards.  surely there has to be a degree of common sense applied.

We felt aggrieved when an obvios corner to us was not awarded and the goalkeeper hit it long to the forward who run between Chambers and Hewitt to tap it in the corner against the run of play.  Both are guilty of ball watching and should have put a tackle in well before he got to the edge of the box. A few minutes later they scored again to make it 3-0 with a good move down their right wing, which made us look pretty poor at the back. It just was not our day for most players. Nick Denny and Dan Lawler seemed to be our best players with Dan producing some wonderful tackles in the middle of the park.

Ryan Polley woke up after 60 minutes and showed some excellent skills.  Bit late as we kicked off at 2pm. Ryan did get a consolation goal with 15 minutes to go which gave us some life. We battled extremely well and should have got more out of this encounter.

The difference in this league between promotion and relegation is not the players' ability.  It's who wants to win most as a team which we need more of. It's a shame that they didn't tell us where to go for teas as I was really hungry.  I wish our players were as hungry to win. To top of a bad day someone nicked my T-shirt and I had to go home in my training jacket which made me very angry. Things will get better when we play simple football.   We must learn from this.
