SAL Cup - 9th December 2006

Although these chaps we played against are in the division above us we gave them a good run out.  Gusto, a bit of passion, sheer grit, determination and some fine football got us through in the end. A great cup game!  We went 1 up after Ryan Polley got chopped down in the box.  Andy Bitmead Jnr stepped up a put the ball in the net.  We went close before when Fatyaan smashed a great shot just wide and the old git Dave "The Fossil" Robins tested the keeper. Thanks to both Richard Clark and Fatyaan for filling in at the last moment!!!

Ben Docherty who has been in my team for the last 3 years worked his socks off in midfield!  He came close to scoring his first goal for the club after hitting the wood-work....  The goal is the bit in the middle....  Will it ever happen?  I hope it's going to be a cup final winner as he really deserves it after his hard work.  This chap is one of the best holding midfield players in the Club.  There are others but we can't comment on that at the moment...

With 18 minutes on the clock West Wickham got an equalizer after some poor defending and I thought the brown stuff had hit the fan.  Oh No...  The 4's don't let things go.  The game should have been all over within 90 mins but we just couldn't finish off the job we came to do.  Extra time happened.  Well,  it could have gone either way but it passed.

PENALTIES - Nigel (goal keeper) missed the first and almost hit the corner flag.  Andy Bitmead smashed his straight at the keeper but he had to re-take it because the keeper came off his line too early. Andy stepped up again.  No pressure.....  Well just a bit....  GOALLLLL.  Daniel Wolf man Hewitt took the 3rd and scored.   Bit soft but they all count.  Unfortunately for Dan these goals don't count on the scorers chart.  Richard Clark took the 4th and scored. Very soft but they all count. By this time flu jab Nigel and saved 2 penalties so it was all down to Mr Polley who drilled it hard and low under the keeper.

A GREAT RESULT which has earned us another quarter final place.  This one is away against South Bank CUACO 4's on 27th Jan 2007. Some say it was Nigel's great saves that won the game. Some say it was Polley's great finish at the end under immense  pressure. I thought it was the chants of "CHRIS WADDLE" to the chaps that missed pens before they stepped up.
