Old Owens

1

Carshalton 5th XI

5 Steve Head 3, Martin Head, John Laming

SAL – 26th October 2002

The third away game in a row took us to Old Owens at Potters Bar.  We arrived at the ground to see a well stocked bar and for the first time this season I was aware of all our players' abilities.  We started the game strongly and the well-kept pitch enabled us to perform quick flowing football from the start.  Martin "Five Bellies" Head flipped a good ball through to Steven Head who opened the scoring after 15 minutes by turning a player and slotting the ball around the keeper (this was the start we needed !).  Steven added a second in the 30th minute from a pass from James Robins.  Steven's shot was saved by the keeper but his follow up made it 2-0.

Old Owens pulled a goal back in the 35th minute with a high bounce that deceived our defence.  Five minutes from half time, Mark Crawley won the ball on the half way line and passed the ball down the right for John Laming to run on to.  John got to the ball first, passed the defender and shot from a tight angle. His 40th minute shot was hit low, hitting the left post then travelling along the goal line at pace and ending up in the back of the net to make it 3-1.  About 1 min from half time, we were awarded a free kick on the right (in the area).  Mark Crawley took the free kick with an inch perfect chip to the far post where Martin Head scored with a well directed header into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 4-1.

At the start of the second half we created many chances and had a number of shots saved by the keeper resulting in corners.  15 minutes into the second half, Steven scored a brilliant third goal by receiving a pass from Martin Head on the left and letting rip with a 20 yard shot curling the keeper and ending up in the back of the net by the right post.  After that we seemed to take our foot off the pedal with Trevor Carpenter coming the closest to score from a free kick (he was closer than you James !!!).

Hopefully, if we don't lose too many players to higher sides without the reciprocal arrangement of being able to pick from the team below us then the future shows encouraging signs.  Ryan, we have discovered why you have blonde highlights!  Your secret will be revealed in next week's report.  Overall a strong team performance.  Man of the match - Steven Head for his 3 goals and his constant pressure on their defence!
