Carshalton 5th XI

SAL – 8th February 2003

If ever a game could be called scrappy it would be this one!  The day started badly when we were reduced to 9 men meeting at Parc de Beddington, plus Jason Crisp travelling on the world’s favourite underground system.  Luckily, Bezad stepped in at short notice to make the trip north and, on behalf of the team & club, thanks Bezad.

Cars travelled to north London on a day when every man, woman & learner bus driver must have been on the roads!  We eventually made it, although only after Alex ‘Schumacher’ Elgins managed to first get stuck at a rail crossing, and then behind the previously mentioned L plated double decker!!!

We kicked off and had the better of the opportunities.  Confidence was displayed throughout the side, which meant the passing on the boggy pitch was as good as it could get.  Carshalton scored the only goal of the game.  After a good move involving several players resulted in a goal mouth scramble, Carshalton player for the day, Bezad, finished off from fully 3 inches out - the ball coming off his ankle and then the post!

From then on Vamps upped their game, but the resolute defending of all 10 outfield players and the swiftness off his line of Barry Consell stopped any moves changing the score line.

This really was a great team performance but, if anyone is to be singled out it should be Ryan McGibbon who marked Ryan Noble’s best mate out of the game and so reduced the Vamps chances of equalising.

Several chances to increase our lead went begging, most notably coming from James Hirst, Martin Head (who has a Al Jolson CD in his music collection?!?!), Jason Crisp and Alex Elgins who only just missed the corner flag from fully 15 yards out!

Vamps very own Ryan Noble look-alike had their best effort, but his Carshalton relative cleared it off the line in one superb orange tinted moment.

So it ended up a good win for us, but many thanks to the Vamps for being gallant in defeat and shouting us all a pint or two afterwards - great hosts!

Roll on the end of March & our little trip to School disco!!!
