SAL – 22nd February 2003
Carshalton ventured beyond Croydon to our local rivals lair in search of revenge for a 5 nil mauling earlier in the season. Revenge looked far from on the cards after half a hour as we were 3 nil down (it must have been the pressure of knowing Cars legend Ian Wigham was watching on-although only on throw-in’s during the 1st team game on the next pitch!!!)
All three goals could be put down to poor marking and even the Wickham lads, if they were honest with themselves would say they were lucky to be 3 up after the first 45mins, they definitely weren’t 3 goals better than us.
We re-grouped after half time and came out and chased everything, but Jason Crisp took those instructions a little too far as he followed a car out of the ground and onto the main road. We shortly reduced the arrears from a long throw from James Hirst, flicked past the WW keeper into the far corner by a defender. This gave us hope of a miracle and shortly after that we made it 3-2. Good Cars midfield pressure forced a loose ball which then found James Hirst, he slid the ball into the path of Martin Head and as the keeper rushed out like a tortoise, the silk boxer-meister swept the ball past him and into the back of the net.
We forced corner after corner, but a breakaway from the home side saw an attacker brought down in the area, and the the spot kick duely dispatched into the Cars net. From another corner Ryan Noble got up well for a ginger bloke and nodded a pin-point delivery past the shell backed custodian to make it 4-3.
Not so long after that Carshalton had hit the bar through Martin Head from another corner, then we won a free kick 25 yards from goal. Suddenly, the West Wickham left back went down a suffered a fit of some description. Our best wishes go out to him, hopefully he is back on his feet, and on the pitch soon. At that point, the decision was made to finish the game and head to the bar.
This result unfortunately heralds the end of our unbeaten run of games, but to score three goals away from home is a result in itself even if we failed to get anyway points.
