SAL – 29th March 2003
We lost 0-5, maybe it was more. A lack of passion was evident and also an element of luck for Old E’s meant we were up against it before we even started. Having said that, Man of the Match was undoubtedly Mark Harris, who ran and ran and ran all day. Unfortunately, his endeavour did not influence those around to a put the same level of effort in.
Cars really only had half chances to work with, but the Old E’s back line looked shaky all afternoon. Two quick goals and then a suspect penalty from a good challenge by Ryan McGibbon saw a 9.9 dive for technique, then a 9.8 for artistic impression, then two fingers from my good self. Green shirted protests were waved away and the penalty taker was unfazed and duly lashed the ball into the top corner. 3-0.
I think we went in at half time with that score line in our minds. 0-2 was definitely an easier score line to claw back, 0-3 was going to be harder.
The fourth and subsequent fifth passed like ships in the night - amazing really because it was around 4.25pm. We did make chances, most notably when Ryan McGibbon rose like a tin of salmon and placed a header just over and then shortly after that Alex Elkins played a delightful cross field diagonal ball for me to head against the post from 12 yards out.
The showers were hotter than an Iraqi in a bombed out trench, the ‘sausages’ in the ‘sausage, chips & beans’ were not sausages and the telly was one of those hand held portable ones that need AA batteries. All in all a great day out - just as well that it was England playing and not an exciting game like Wales v Azer…..
Thanks and good luck to Old E’s for the rest of the season. Hope you all have a great summer!
