SAL Division 4 - 19th November 2005

We turned up to find that Old Salesians had withdrawn their 5s because so many players had been kicked out of the club for not paying subs.  We were told that we would be playing their 4s and that apparently they were on their way from Clapham and would be there as soon as they could.  We played their 5s the previous week in the SAL Cup - a game which  I wish we had never started.  For some reason we had quite a crowd watching this game, with the air filled with wacky backy... an interesting mix in the cold winter air.

With numerous cry offs we were down to the bare bones for this game.  Henry our new goalkeeper was even on the bench as a makeshift centre forward as the infamous Neil Backers was making his comeback from injury.  Fair play to Henry for showing such a good attitude.

Right from the off (like the previous week) we controlled the game playing some lovely football - very direct attacking down both flanks via the Winnister / Davies flying wingers.  Wini nearly scored with a header from an outstanding cross from Mark Raven.  Luke Appleton dictated play in midfield as Sam Johnson let loose up front smashed in two goals.  What a relief when we got the second goal.

At the back Tom Scola never gave up in his battle against some lively wingers and Ross made the most of his opportunity with some good knocks down the line.  The old war horse Dick and Matt kept me on a leash as I reacquainted myself with their friendly midfielder who took great exception when I informed him that I wasn't his brother nor was I his mate.

In the second half Sam could have had another two goals easily, hitting the post, going past players like they weren't there.  Their centre half was doing impressions of a windmill in his attempts to stop him at times.

As for Neil Backers it was great to see this shy retiring young goalkeeper making his debut for us, called into action later on in the game as they attacked us.

For the first time this season we really clicked.  All parts of the team played very, very well indeed.  Big thanks to the substitutes who came along at late notice.  See you all at training on Thursday
