Match Report...

Carshalton 5s

2 Danny Berry, Mark Raven

Old Actonians 7s

1

SAL Division 4 - 8 April 2006

We had three games left to get three points for promotion.  The first game we lost 0-8 to Old Actonians.  Second game we drew against our 6s, with them equalising last kick of the game.  Not many people gave us much hope to beat a team which hammered us 8:0 two weekends before.

With myself being banned and Matthew Macloughan suffering a horrendous knee injury (previous game against Old Actonians) and James Thorley going AWOL and both Henry and Ross Wilding, disappearing as well we went into this game with another changed team.

The team played exceptionally well first half controlling the game with young Mikey who should have scored twice with a bit more of a gamble.  The team carried on with the level of performance we showed against the 6's.  Unfortunately as per the previous week we allowed a sloppy goal in from a corner - great header but everyone had left it thinking the cross was going away from goal.  0-1 down at half time, but we were playing well.

We had 45 minutes to turn our season around.  The outstanding Danny Berry smashed in a long range free kick with those white boots of his.  We carried on bombarding the Old Actonians goal before being awarded a penalty twenty minutes to go.  Mark Raven duly stood up and missed - the word is "bugger".

Tom in goal made one outstanding save which he actually injured himself before Mark Raven Soup Dish winner 2005/2006 scored the winner with five minutes to go.

A great game; exceptional performances all round.  Sam Johnson and Danny were exceptional in midfield.  Ross Davies ran himself into the ground before being replaced by Elliott Stevens who continued in the hard work.  Wini did really well showing some lovely touches when he came on.  Alex continued from last week and Ravo - what can you say?  Missed a penalty, but scored the winner.

At the back Tom Scola had his best game of the season.  Dick and Matt were anything but Boumsong and Bramble and Peter Lester has got to be the most improved player in the team this season - gone are the slices!

Suffice to say Sam Johnson was our Players Player of the Year.  Alex Kiszczuk was the Managers Player of the Year with Sportsman awards to both Ross Wilding and Ross Davies.

It's been a very tough season.  We have struggled in the goalkeeper department with 5 keepers being used throughout.  We have been spoiled by Terry Vinson in recent years.  The addition part way through of Dick Polley and Mark Raven strengthened the very young side.  Young Luke Appleton and Matt MacLoughlan also joined us midway to further strengthen the squad.  Similarly once we got Danny Berry back after Christmas, it added further experience.  I appreciate everyone's efforts in the team and appreciate that they put themselves out to attend my training each week.  It was the only way to develop / strengthen call it whatever you want the young players in the team.  We worked very hard in training and this transferred itself onto the pitch on Saturdays.  There is no comparison to the team back in October to that which beat Old Actonians.

Big thanks to the Committee and all the people who have at some stage contributed to the running of the club this season.

Have a good Summer.
