SAL Division 3 - 23 September 2006
Who would be a skipper? The previous week the whole squad turned up. This week I had five drop outs with three of them Saturday morning. Emergency action required and fortunately the Reserve Pool came into use with Tom Scola and Michael Winister helping out or should I say dragged out of bed at 10am Saturday morning. I saw Tyrone Knight in the car park outside the Club and asked him what team he was playing for but the response was such that I thought better of my proposed kidnap!!!
On arrival at South Bank I told our players the situation with drop outs etc and also told them that their bar and food facilities were closed. asked South Bank if their players were adverse to buttering bread as we had had to take up the mantle the previous week.
Anyway onto the football. A very hot day and after last week's unfortunate defeat we had to get something out of the game. First half we attacked with some great work from both Wini and Alex upfront who both led the line magnificently well. They really should have had at least one goal apiece before half time. South Bank were reduced to breakaways only with their most potent weapon being their goalkeeper's long kick. The back four with Steve Smith making his debut were outstanding.
Second half we kept working hard and with ten minutes to go we got the break through. Tom Scola drove home from the edge of the area to make it 1-0.
Everybody continued to work hard for the remaining ten minutes and we again hit the post and unluckily had a goal disallowed from Peter Lester.
Big well done to the referee and to South Bank who played the game in good spirits etc.
Major thanks to both Wini and Tom who were dragged out of bed at 10am and went on to play outstandingly well. Many thanks. The fight for places is on.
