SAL Division 3 - 17th April 2007
A difficult evening fixture to finish the season with. Getting eleven bodies to the ground for a 6pm KO proved very difficult but we got there. We started off the match playing some champagne football with Mike Harwood and Sam Johnson providing good wing play whilst Alex and John Harris held the ball up well bringing others into play. After missing a host of chances we finally went one nil up through a real classy effort by Sam Johnson – a half volley from the edge of the area into the bottom corner- Gerrardesque. 1-0 at the break, conscious we needed that second goal.
This soon arrived through a competent finish by Jon Harris who nearly spooned it but didn’t - 2-0 up. We then went to sleep allowing two very soft goals. South Bank then had the bit between their teeth and attacked us very hard. Andy Ley’s interceptions proved very important. To be fair we played through it and scored again on the break 5 mins to go through Alex who lobbed the ball in the top corner from a yard out! – they all count.
We then held on and won which was good.
It’s been a difficult season. We started off badly, making silly errors and losing games which we shouldn’t have, which affected confidence. Plus I had difficulty with player availability and with Jarvis not available, we played most games without a goalie which has caused us real problems. We even had one lad in goal once who didn’t even own a set of gloves! But we kept going and fought our way through, keeping our disciplines. We trained and prepared for all the games. I hope the new lads including Messrs North, Trumper, Vellacott, Blackman, Woodward, Harwood, Morris and Ley who joined the Club this season appreciated the way we approach our football. I know everything was a new experience and hopefully next season things will fall into place.
MOM Skipper Smith and Andrew Ley who made some vital interceptions
Have a good summer
