SAL – 1 March 2003

One day Mr Osborne wakes up and decides he’s tired of teaching.  He phones up the Glenthorne high School and tells them he won’t be working for them anymore.  He still needs money for food and mortgage repayments so he decides to invest his £3,000 savings by starting up a new business producing Chocolate Monkeys.

He uses his shrewd business knowledge to set up his new Monkey Mocha© enterprise and the orders come flooding in.  He decides to produce as much as he can in a 10 hour working day to try to keep up with demand.  Mr Osborne employs three people.

  1. Mick: Mixes ingredients ready for moulding
  2. Keith: Moulds the chocolate into monkey shapes
  3. Ronnie: Puts the chocolate into the boxes ready for sale.

This works well and within a month Mr Osborne has broken even. Being a wry old devil Mr. Osborne is constantly looking for new ways to make money and soon enough he sees an opportunity.  He decides to advertise as a catering service and begins to offer all sorts of chocolate animals as dessert at parties and functions.  His first customer is the National Trust who order 200 chocolate Badgers for their annual Dinner Dance.

Profits are soaring and Monkey Mocha© is a becoming a countrywide legend, many different chocolate animals have been made and eaten all over England.  Then just when he thought he couldn’t get any larger his biggest order yet comes in.  An urgent fax is received by Monkey Mocha© headquarters from none other than the King of Rock himself - Bryan Adams.

The Fax reads:

Mr Osborne, I’ve heard a lot about your Monkey Mocha© chocolates and have a big task to ask of you.  As I’m sure you know I am a big fan of monkeys but my favourite monkey is the spider monkey.  It’s my 60th birthday in April and I would like a giant chocolate spider monkey at my party to celebrate the event.  I am willing to pay you £1m. Are you up to the job?

Well Mr. Osborne relishes a challenge and decided to take on the task, however due to an order of 100 chocolate Jellyfish from Elton John, his task force of Mick, Keith and Ronnie were too busty to help.  On his own, Mr. Osborne set about the task.  The spider monkey was finished by April and flown to Canada.  It was a beautiful specimen and eared Monkey Mocha© £1m, Bryan loved it. Mr. Osborne retired.

The End

Q: Identify the three methods of production employed by Monkey Mocha©.  Where and why are they used?
