AFA Intermediate Novets Cup – 15 November 2003

A highly competitive cup game which could have gone either way.  Unfortunately for us we could not convert our chances and they scored from one of their very few attacks.  To be honest Terry did not have a lot else to do all afternoon.

The whole team played very well and in my opinion it was actually a better performance than the previous week at Lloyds. The back four was well marshalled by Messrs Boughton and Polley.  Danny Berry and Chris Hicks worked very hard in midfield.  To be fair both John Smith and Gilles Warrell worked the UCL back four harder than they had at Lloyds.

Things may well have been different if I had converted my chance early in the first half instead of hitting the post. The first half was fairly even. However in the early part of the second half UCL did put us under some pressure.  It should be noted that out debutant right back - a certain John Thoroughgood - had to disappear at half time to get some new boots. The pitch was in the middle of a tremendous sporting complex so he did well to get back before the end of the game.  It was disappointing because we actually weathered the UCL pressure (John was back by the end of it). They scored with 10 / 15 minutes to go from a deep cross which we failed to clear. A silly goal to give away.

After that we put them under a lot of pressure and Messrs Smith and Warrell had clear chances to equalize . It wasn't to be but I am sure if we play like that every week we will win more than we lose...
